AR. question

Good question...they probably don't really have an A/R number.

Some of the other "asian" turbos (mitsu, etc.) use only an expession for the area (the "A" of A/R), rather than using the ratio (A divided by R), like Garret does.

I bet there's a number on it that denotes the area...but I haven't had one of those things here in years. I'm going to Performance Techniques tomorrow or Thursday...I'll check one out and see what I can find.

i was just wondering cause i got a T3 turbo with a .42 compressor ar and .48 exhuast and 60 trim compressor wheel and i was wondering how much on an increasse i gained

Uhhh...I don't really understand what you're asking...

You just got the T3 and want to know if it's better than the IHI? Not really.

The IHI is a great turbo, it's just not easily "upgradeable". They last forever and they have the same or a little more capacity than a stock T3.

They had auto and manual versions of both the IHI and the T3...the T3 you have is for an auto. IMO, the .48 exhaust is lame. What little you gain down low in response, you give up 10X over, anywhere past 5 grand...they choke the crap out of the motor just to make boost a couple hundred RPM sooner (which is really worthless anyways).

yeah but the sad thing about the IhI is that it has a smaller exhuast ar. i mean just by looking at it its smaller and the Ihi has a smaller compressor wheel... IHI's dont last forever ive went through 2 just runnin 17.5 psi on them... the T3 i have isnt off of a svo or older t-bird it suposedly came off of a Buick GNX ... he had it on a Del sol .... the Ihi turbo is only good for around 240 horse.. my friend has a 240xs with a SR20Det from japan in it they have the stock nissan T-25 and there turbo's are good for 275 hp and 250 whrp... and my turbo is almost the completly same thing as his..

"A/R" has nothing to do with the size of anything. It's a ratio of two measurements. You can have a ".63" T2 (tiny) and a ".63" Thumper (Huge).

Further, rating turbos for horsepower is the closest thing you can get to total nonsense. There's so much more to it than that. A turbo that will make "X" power on engine #1 may be totally incapable of making the same power on engine #2. An IHI will make as much power on a 2.3L as a stock T3 will, it's just not easily "up-gradeable"...but it will last much longer.

The fact that you killed two of them says more about the oil line in your car than how well they hold up. I've seen several of them last to 200K...one to 300.
