are 1 5/8 lt headers enough for a 331?

i was going to get 1 3/4 bbks for $430,then u friend of mine has a 347 running nines, that has 1 5/8 headers.Ive been told i need 1 3/4 or 1 5/8.I just need to know for sue before i spend this money.1 5/8 bbks are $360.dont want to spend the extra money if i dont have too. thanks
