my dads buddy is just putting our motor back together and was wondering what the torque specs are for the fine head studs. anyone know where i could find that?
Go to your local parts store and pick a Haynes or Chilton Manual. It will have the torque specs for damn near every bolt in the car. Be sure to follow the corect torquing sequence for the top end. The ARP kits bolt to the same torque as the stock I believe. The benefit over stock is that they are far stronger and can take a serious pounding. Anyone feel free to correct if I am wrong on something here.
They list two different torque values depending on whether you use engine oil or the ARP lube when you torque them down. I recommend ARP lube since its a better lubricant and torque values are lower because of it. I'll try to make a mental note tomorrow of checking of the instruction sheet tomorrow when I am in the garage.
OH Snap, they' re right. Just popped openthe ARP kit and the sheet reads as follows:
Torque values are based on 75% of the fastners yield strength. Use the manufactuers torque sequence but do not use the manufacturers torque specs. Torque the bolts to 65 Ft. lbs. with 30 wt ARP MOLY ASSEMBLY LUBRICANT (or ARP THREAD SEALER) or torque to 85 Ft. lbs. with 30 wt motor oil.
