Astro 5speed

I suppose If I were to go with a T5 I would use Astro. G Force has a bad rep, and Pro Motion uses G force parts.. The most I've ever seen an Astro rated for is 450 lb ft, though. Just don't ever make plans to make more torque than that and you'll be fine. If you're going to build a monster you might want to explore other avenues..

They actually sell two different models. One is rated for 485tq and the other for 575tq. You are right about G Force, their reputation has gone down. The only reason I bought the one I did was because it was assembled in 2004, by Tony at Astro. The guy I bought it from still had all the reciepts for it. This was before Astro was building their own and before G Force's quality went down. Its already been said a few times in this thread, no one can really talk badly about Astro's T5's based on first hand experience. Only good things have been said.

here is something to think about, the old GM muscle car 4 speeds would come apart like a card board box, are t-5s dont do that, are t-5 cases have ribs on the side that make them stronger,, if the problem we are having is the case spreading then why has nobody had a T-5 case with cracks,,. maybe g force is using a cheaper steel, or not as hard as ASTRO

The difference between the 2 A-5's is that the higher rated one has a 9310 main shaft. I have the lower rated of the 2 built by Tony. Tony also rebuilt my faceplated G-force. The G-force is street-able and I doubt anyone could ever miss an upshift, but the A-5 is a pleasure to click gears with on the street.

Did you even read through your own post? It's no wonder there's no response.

G-Force and Astro don't make the transmission housings. Borg Warner does/did.

I know that, i think you missed my point,,, that the steel in the gear sets are maybe not the same,i know the cases are the same

I think you should do a few google searches on T5 transmissions and their related problems. They have always had problems with shaft deflection. This is when you put the grunt to it, the torque makes the gears try to push away from themselves. When the contact on the gear teeth reaches close enough to the tip of the tooth, the gears break. The whole shaft deflection thing comes into being from several different causes, all of them piss poor design. Case being a major cause..bearing layout another.

I wouldn't say the T5 is a bad design so much as it was just never meant to handle big block torque that most guys are making with their small blocks these days. *baby talk* It's just a wittle itty bitty guy!

Exactly. They're not terrible for what they were designed for, but terrible for what we put them through. Back in 1987 they did just fine handling that whopping 225 HP.. LOL.

There's a guy from the Houston area that was pretty famous back in the 80's and I believe was partially responsible for the NMRA/PRO 5.0 racing coming about. His name was Gene Deputy, and he did really cool stuff with T5s, like put them sub 10 seconds, back then. Not real sure what happened to him..

Too bad he doesn't build those things locally anymore.. maybe I should look him up.
 
G-force makes an aftermarket case for the T-5. An upgraded cluster support is offered by Astro and maybe G-force too?

If you are thinking of an upgraded T-5 call Tony at Astro. Tell him what you are doing and he will recommend a transmission to fit your needs. I doubt he would push any T-5 if he thought it was boarder line strength wise. Last thing Astro wants is a broken trans.

Getting kinda off the subject, but to make up for it, he did use T5s. I stopped in his shop a few times back in the day. Real nice guy. Here's an article on him:

This article says they used lencos, but there were many others about hm using T5. I'd like to know what he did to them. think I'll dig around and see if I can find something..

Exactly what happened to me...went into gear for a split second... Then toast.. And that is exactly what bob Hanlon told me what happened with my stocker..same prob with the g force.. Gotta be the case design..

Well, case design, and shaft design. The way it was explained to me what's going on is the shaft will actually bow a little because the way the thing's designed... they can't put large enough shafts in the trans due to the bearing fits being so close together, and there is so long a span from one end to the other It causes the shaft to bow out or deflect. You can also get deflection if the bore that your bearing fits into is worn out and oversized, the shafts can push away a few thousandths and that's all she wrote. Dead.

Right, and I think the A5 at least somewhat cures that by using stiffer steel, bigger gears, and adding material into the shafts where they can. It's never gonna be a Jerico, but from what I've seen, the A5 is the stoutest production T5 ever.
