asuming the timing belt broke

How do you know where to realign a new timing belt. I see the camshaft lined up with the yellow marks, and the crankshaft with the little triangle thing linned up, but how do you know where to line up the 3rd gear that rotates the rotor.

We took off the distributor cap and tried to position it under the #1 plug but still had to advance it quite a bit for it to work, and i use the term work very loosely. The car wouldn't run unless the carb. air intake was closed all the way. If i touched on the gas, even the slightest bit the car dies. And to make matters worse there is fuel that kinda just squirts out of what im thinkin is the fuel pump, underneath the power stearing.

In general my question is how to know if timing belt is aligned right, and do i need a new fuel pump?

i drive an 85 mustang lx 2.3 liter with the one barrel carb.

Now i need to choose, i have option of a $25 or $100 fuel pump

the $100 says it's closer to factory but i've only got 40 bucks to spare for the next 2 weeks. i think it's 4-9 lbs pressure and the $25 doesnt say anything, i was checking on autozone

it left about a regular coffe cup full of fuel under the car while it was runnin for 5min. with the air intake fully closed. just spewwing out(droppin fuel like it's hot)
