ok..i dont really have a mustang..i have a grand marquis..the old granny version of the crown vic..it has the 5liter 302 in it..i was wondering..ive read on Neons.org..that tranny swaps in their cars are quite common..i was wondering if it would be all that hard if i bought a stang tranny and cut a hole in my tranny hump in my cabin and slid the tranny right in?

also..if i were to do this..what would i do with the steering column shifter?

thnx

Nothing, Cut it out, leave it alone, whatever you want. It controls nothing.

The thing with this is you are putting a manual tranny in a car that never had one from the factory.

It has been done before though, guys have put 5-spds in cars that never had them. Mark 7's, Mark 8's, LTD's. The thing is, they were able to do it because the vehicle they had shared a platform with something else that did have a 5-spd. They could rob parts like clutch pedals and such. The Mark 7 and LTD got their parts from the Mustang/Turbo COupe, the Mar8 guys could rob parts from a Thunderbord Supercoupe.

Not sure what you would rob parts from with a Grand Marquis. I don't think any of the panther cars ever came in a 5-spd. Sure the tranny will bolt up, you may need a custom driveshaft and maybe tranny xmember, but what are you gonna use for a clutch pedal??

because the thing is..i love my g-marquis...but i may also have a plymouth neon commin my way..and i love that..but if i can get into modding my g-marquis..because there are like no parts availible for it..then i would keep that...i have an import brain..but a hot-rod heart

Just get a cheap mustang and call it a day. A Grand Marquis is not a light automobile!

I would say that (besides being able to say that you modded) it would be next to useless to do on a Grand Marquis.

Just my 2 cents, TIFWIW

It's a 5.0L, a ton of parts that fit 5.0L Mustangs will also fit that car but you have to do more research before buying those parts to be sure.

As for the swap, i'd say the part you are going to have the hardest time with is the clutch pedal because i really doubt the Mustang clutch pedal and quadrant will just bolt in to the g marquis. So its very likely you'll have to do some custom mods to get everything to work.
You could probably just take the shift lever off the steering column so that shouldnt be a problem.

There are a ton of lincoln owners who modify their cars all over the internet, all you have to do is a quick search to find them.

Good luck on the swap.

yea..i know im gonna havta do custom modding to everything except the engine

i didnt know lincoln owners modded them..wow..lol lincoln towncar gt-x..haha

and as for the g-marquis being heavy..ur right..4400lbs..but it would be alot more fun to drive with a stiff suspension and a stick wouldnt it?..lol..plus it would b faster with a 5 or 6 speed in it

and the tranny wouldnt b the only thing..im thinkn i would put 98 explorer seats in the front..or something close..and do custom rear seats

as for the cheap mustang..the thing is..i dont wanna buy another car..but i NEVER thought about that..haha..seriously i didnt..i dont think my mom would be too happy though..even if i did just plpd insurance...uhhm..good point though..wow..lol

thnx for all the help guys..which do u think would be cheaper and more efficient though?
-new junkyard stang and fix it up
-''riced out'' neon
-weird lookn custom g-marquis?

Well, more like Lincoln Mark 7's and Mark 8's are the ones that get modded. But like i said, they are popular platforms.

But i have seen some newer Town Cars modified.

The 5.0 in the grand marquis isn't exactly the same as the Mustang. It's the "STandard Output" 5.0. The Mustang and Mark 7 have the "High Output". There are a few differences. Depending on your year car, you can have anywhere from 150-200HP stock. The HO motor has 225HP.

There are mods for the 5.0, but you'd need to swap to a HO motor.

If it was my car, and you really liked it and it was worth modding.

I'd do a 331 stroker 5.0 motor, with a supercharger, keep the AOD but build it up with a shift kit and stall converter, put a dual exhaust on it with some flowmasters and get some gears in that rear end (i dunno what they have stock). Then paint it COMPLETLY Black, tint the windows 20%, no emblems and it will look, sound and be pure evil.

WHat year is this car anyway??

A Grand Marquis is the same as a LTD. With a Grand Marquis, the added weight and work would make it not worth the while. A t-5 is a peice of crap anyways, and with the added weight, it wouldn't last very long. Sell the Grand Marquis or get a stall converter, gears, HO motor Transgo shift kit, and ROLL out.

What year GM we talking though? I'm not sure the GM/CV/TC was ever a Fox Platform car.

That's my idea as well. Put a HO maybe a little modded up, mod up the AOD and pimp it Men-in-Black style

aw man..lol u guys hate the big cars dont u? 91 grand marquis ls sedan

i really didnt know that bout the motors..i wondered y my air intake was on the right instead of left like mustangs

but i really dont have the money for the motor or charger..but if i get the mods for my engine now..could i switch them later?...also...y would the weight and everything make it not worth it? im not planning on racing it or even getting in the low 20s i just like standard trannys more then autos..plus i could accel better for passing..and get better gas milage...to be honest..i really dont like fords trannys..are their any other trannys that bolt up to the 302?

im still debating on either the GM or the neon

if i got the g-marquis i would most likely round out the square body..maybe bolt the 92 body on there..custom headlights and tails..lower it (what springs are on that bad boy)
stiffen it up, like..4'' thick rollbars so i would have no body lean, ford explorer seats..MAYBE MTX or race quality ATX..custom paint..exhaust..engine build up..top end only though..i dont wanna mess with the bottem end..prob not a supercharger intill i got alot of money..or maybe even like..a turbo..or even a twin-turbo (but not the standard parrellel hook up..hook it up into a series so the boost gets boosted)

with the neon i would just buy a body kit, interior stuff and engine dress up with some rims and later put on a aftermarket ECU and a turbo
