Audio Peeps, In Here.

I think so. We're gonna take the cheap route because from the manual ( I managed to find one) the audio selection is made through the TV settings interface, which means It's either the TV speakers on or the Optical audio out that is on, not both at the same time.

F it. The TV will not do both forms of audio at the same time, so I'm going to see if I can't find a cheap receiver with it's own headphone jack, turn the TV speakers off and be done with it. I have some extra speakers lying around I can use with the stereo.

Ok.. I'll post the solution I was thinking about when I read the first post:

This is the best way to split HDMI in my opinion. If you have the need to do this, don't buy an HDMI selector with a remote. You got enough chit to adjust by remote just by changing sources.

You don't need this for your problem though.

What you need is this:

...and any pair of Bluetooth headphones that your grandpa puts on his head and likes. He'll have complete volume control and it will also transmit that same signal to any other Bluetooth device that you like at an audio level that is separate from grandpa's (say, small sound bar so everyone else can watch too). The Bluetooth version is important. You will find $4.99 transmitters out there and they do work. Generally, they can only bind and transmit to one device at a time.

The real key here is the headphones. The world is currently FILTHY with Bluetooth headphones right now. You can get some good ones cheap. By that I mean less than $50. Gramps can use them to listen to other devices as well.

Her boobs are not her most attractive feature.

Oh I what I meant was: :fap:

That boob device..... sorry, got distracted.

That bluetooth device looks like it should do what you need for the audio solution. Many years ago my Mom had a TV listening device that had the control box on top of the TV with a small audio pickup you place on over the TV speaker, and in IR set of headphones for the listener. They worked very well, but she eventually got tired of having to wear headphones all the time to watch TV. I don't think anyone makes anything like that any more?

Boobs....drool!

Let's not forget he doesn't want to worry about charging stuff, reconnecting a bad blue signal...
something plug and play.

A receiver with some small speakers close to his seating area, or my original baby monitor idea! Lol!

I'll give my FIL credit though. While he's not so keen on the digital age, he seriously knows his analog stuff. He's partly responsible for leading the development and design of the tactics and systems for the F-4s to evade SAM sites in Korea. Give him a 100% mechanical car and he'll fix it all day long. Give him one of these newer computer cars and he'll tell you to take it to the shop.

Ditch the D/A box and replace it with this in the chain.

Amazon product ASIN B013QR1JJYView: http://www.amazon.com/ELEGIANT-Extractor--embedder-Converter-Headphones/dp/B013QR1JJY/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1457630307&sr=8-5&keywords=hdmi+splitter+with+audio+out

Edit : This way your volume out to the headphone out will be at a fixed volume. So, when people adjust the TV volume it isn't adjusting the volume of the signal hitting the amplifier.
+10 internets for you today good Sir!
