I have not decided if I'm going to keep the new stang auto or convert to 5spd. I'm trying to weigh my options.

What can I do to get the use out of the AOD in place of a 5 spd? I plan to do 4.10's here soon, and some suspension mods (Until end of summer, early next winter H/C/I and minor bolt ons). I have not a clue on what to do to make an AOD nasty (shift kit, converter, manual valve body, shifter)? Any suggestions and who I can turn to for prices would be great as well as what parts to get. The tranny in the car is an AOD, not the AOD-E.

I know a guy who's been doing trannys most of his life, and would do the work for next to nothing. I just don't want to spend a ton on parts, because if it costs more than doing a 5 spd swap, I'll just convert. Plans for the car is to eventually build an 11 sec nice day car that looks mostly stock on the outside. What kind of power will an AOD support? Post up some pics of auto shifters inside the car if you got em. Thanks! :nice:

IMO..i would stay AOD go over to click click racing.com...Its a site with some nasty AOD cars, there is a guy over there Sliverfox...PM him he builds some nasty transmissions...And also IMO...you cant beat a good set up auto...i mean it will be more consistant...A stick you have to be one hell of a driver ..An auto is a little more forgiving...once you learn how to Launch...I have an 87 GT i just bought it has some type of Shift kit in it and it moves out comapared to my 93 GT i have with a stock AOD...hope this helps...:nice:

go to a stick this is a toy your supose to drive your self it seems like nobody wants to drive anymore. you really want to do somethin nobody els is doin shift it yourself then when you beat em after the race race you can say. yeh and i acually drive my car too and still beat ya
anyone can hammer down the track and run the same time over and over go to a tremic 600 and you'll never break it. Tony

Nothing wrong with keeping the automatic. You'll definately want to change the torque converter & add a shift kit. The 4.10 gears are a great idea as well. As far as a shifter is concerned it isn't a necessity, but if you just wanted one, the B&M Hammer is the only direct fit.

I'm most likely going to stay with the AOD for now anyways. I've never had an auto stang, and would like to see the consistancy for once.

Any idea on a convertor and shift kit? Alot of guys talk about PI convertors. Who sells them, and how much? What stall do I go with? And what shift kit? Any other mods that need to be done? Any good companies out there that have a good tech department that might be able to help me?

I tried to message Silver Fox, but it won't allow me because I need over 25 posts. That will take forever in a forum about AOD stangs, since I know nothing about them and don't really have the time to read up on the subject.

Anyone have pics of the B&M hammer shifter mounted in a fox? Does it sit flush with the console, or stick up a mile?

Thanks alot guys!:nice:

If you want i can give you his phone number to call him he is the nicest guy you will ever talk to..And he can set you up nicely even can get you connected to a guy on there that does Convertors too....Let me know....:nice:

I have an AOD in my 95 mustang because i already had it built. You can build a AOD to take 700hp easily. As far as shifting.....Get a manual valve body and shift it like you hate it. Shifting in my AOD feels like the car is getting rear ended...Just make sure you get a stacked transmission cooler (preferably for a F series truck *Cheaper) The AOD will give an all new meaning to "Banging threw gears" Only drawback is i think you get about 3-5% more drivetrain loss....but the time you save clutch peddling around you'll be going faster. I use a hammer shifter myself. No missing gears and lightening fast.

I have had 3 t-5 fox bodies and one AOD fox body. The AOD is the only one still around. I prefer an auto any day of the week. My AOD with 4:10's out back feels like someone just rearended you when it hits second and third gear. I LOVE that feeling!

You love the feeling of being "Rear ended" ??? :rlaugh:

Just kidding. Yeah at points i thought i was going to break something on my stock rear end. I have a nice low Stall Converter (B&M 2400) So its pretty quick seeing how fast my motor revs. But either way upgrade the trans. cooler.

LOL Yeah I set myself up fpr that one, but I agree on the cooler. I have my fluid routed through the stock coole rin the radiator then into a B&M cooler. In my opinion an aftermarket cooler is a MUST for the AOD.

What is everyone running for a convertor? Is a B&M any good? I hear alot of guys talking about PI convertors...I plan to do a shift kit, B&M hammer shifter, and some sort of convertor as well as a cooler when I do all of this. What tranny fluid does everyone recommend? Thanks guys!

B&M 2400 Stall Hole Shot Converter, B&M Hammer Shifter, Tru-Cool 4739 MAX Transmission Cooler (Make sure you get stacked plate design (NO TUBES) Bigger the better. DO NOT RUN A BYPASS VALVE. They screw up = Transmission fail. Oh and i use Valvoline "Type F" Fluid. Gives the firmest shifts.

Can't stress it enough....get the biggest MOFO Stacked plate cooler you can get your hands on!!! Don't want that Transmission EVER overheating.

How hard is the tranny cooler to install? I'm new to this auto stuff...where does the tranny cooler mount? Behind the bumper somewhere I'm guessing so that air can flow through? How much am I looking for a tranny cooler? And what kind of shift kit?

A good stacked plate cooler kit is under a hundred dollars and you mount it to your A/C condensor if you still have A/C and to your radiator if not. Best investment you can make for an AOD.

Any certain brand I should get? Do you just plug off the tank in the bottom of the radiator, and run those lines to the new cooler? Now I just need to figure out what convertor and shift kit. Thanks guys!

I have an edge convertor 3500+ stall and I backed off on my 1st to 2nd shift because it was so hard I thought it may break something, and using type "F" fluid is NOT the fluid to use, it just don`t lube things like the newer fluids (lube makes things last longer).
If you want your teeth to fall out on the shifts then you can do that with the valve body, and the cost is only the price of new fluid to put in it when your done recalibrating the valve body.
B&M is not much of a stall convertor, go with dirty dog, edge, ptc you will be better off.
2800 to 3200 stall is very streetable with or without lockup.

How do I determine if I need a lockup or not? And what shift kit would be a good one to go with? I have not a clue about building an AOD to take abuse. The car will hopefully see low 12's high 11's someday and this is just the start of it. Gears, suspension, and tranny mods along with subframes and tourque box reinforcements. I'll be running radials also. So any advice on a shift kit, or valve body, and what I would need would be great. I get the stall part now...just lost on the lockup and valve body part. Thanks!:nice:
