I may be purchasing a used GT and I planned on upgrading to a 6spd manual. I was wondering difficult and expensive this would be. The project car would be an auto tranny.
How difficult/much if i had started with a 5spd trans.
well if you started with a 5speed then you would need the t56 that mounted to a cobra and a new driveshaft and shifter.... i believe theres a kit for the switch online somewhere
It's expensive. I rule dout doing my 4r07w to a t-56 due the the extream prices. I am still thinking of doing a built t-45 or another tremec of some kind. But that too is expensive. Everything has to be replace from the tranny to the driveshaft. I help give you more numbers if you want as I go along, but damn pricey.
1. tranny
2. clutch
3. pedal assembly
4. slave cylinder
5. drive line mod?
7. shift boot
8. computer mod?
9. crossmember?
10. tranny mount?
11. shifter (if not inculed with the tranny)
12. shift knob
the list above outlines most things involed in a tranny swap. some of the ones with a ? by them I don't know if you need it but assume you do as I have never done a tranny swap on a mustang of this year.
add up the prices of those parts and you have you cost if your doing the labor yourself. look for a wrecked car to get all your doner parts from and you may make out okay. if you could find a wrecked cobra you could get almost everthing you need.
I was thinking about getting a used tranny (just a 5 speed) on ebay or something for next winter's project....I couldnt afford to get a new tranny though...too much money.
