automatic trans questions

Im getting an 88 auto vert this week and it should have an AOD correct? Where can I get a stall convertor for it and what kind of trans fluid should I use and how much?

Post up what mods your new car will have (and/or what your plans are) and that will help.

Seems to me you would use Mercon in your AOD.

its going to be a daily driver. probably just an h pipe and maybe a cold air intake. I would put maybe a cam in it if the speed density would work with it. I plan to bracket race it a little too.

If it's a daily driver, I wouldn't go too extreme. A few hundred RPM's above stock should be fine say anywhere from 2000 to 2400. Precision Industries makes really nice converters.

Yeah if the motors stock a 2400 is perfect.IMO Precision Industries makes the best converter.I have a 2800 stall with stock H/C/I and its a little too big.It has gotten better with the addition of 1.7 RR's but not quite perfect.So 2400 is your best bet.They are 700 beans though! Edge makes a really nice converter for a couple hundred less,and guys who have em swear by a 3000 stall Im not gonna argue because I never tried one.But a tranny cooler is a "must" if you get one,or your tranny will burn up inside.There pretty cheap,under a 100 bucks!

The 302 puts out great power at the 3000-3200 RPM range so the converter should be 700 RPM below PEAK power point. Still the 2600-3000 range LOCKUP converter for daily driver is going to be the best bet.

your should use Mercon, but if you want to splurge you can use Mercon V (5).

I would suggest adding a shift kit from www.becontrols.com along with the converter. The stock shift VB is total crap!

oh, and the crower 15501 cam with 114 LSA is a great SD cam with some whicked midrange power from what i have been hearing. I have decided to MAF upgrade and go 112LSA with a crane 2031.

How many miles on the car/tranny? If there is any significant milege on it, I would suggest maby getting a soft parts rebuild. Putting a shift kit and/or stall on a old tranny usually kills it rather quickly. My Camaro has the stock tranny with 105K miles on it. Everyone tells me, and I know from experience, that a stall makes such a huge difference, especailly on those cars because it has a very tight converter, and a cam, so it needs one. I know if I put a stall on it, I'll be rebuilding the whole tranny within a year most likley. Then again, if your hard on it, even without a stall, your probally going to kill it anyways, so I really don't know what I am trying to say.

If your going to get a differnet converter, the first thing I would do is put on a tranny cooler (B&M supercooler) flush the trans, put in a tranny temp gauge, maby a better deeper pan, put in a new filter, maby a shift kit, then do the converter. I would suggest a 2500-3000rpm stall speed. Get a lockup converter so it will be just like stock when cruising, but comming off the line, it will really wake up. If your only going to be on the street, 2500 should do, but if you plan on going to the track much, 3000.
