AWD in a stang???

i saw a tv show a few months back where someone (i think chip foose) built a 34 or so ford and it had all wheel drive. how would something like this be done?? or would you have to be chip to do it.

You wouldn't have to be Chip, just have lots of re$ource$ like Chip

maybe that Bronco Chassis with a lift kit?

sorry, I saw that Bronco comment and just had to do it. I wonder if this guy ever sold his snowplow??

it actually has been done in 1965 by a guy named ferguson. he built a couple a awd prototypes that he showed ford, who wasnt really interested, and then he tried to interest people in an aftermarket conversion. it worked pretty well, and the car was raised about 1 1/2" above stock.

I know of the car of which you speak, and it was plain old freakin' bad a**. Don't sweat your idea or the reaction to it. These guys are giving you a hard time and are only f'in with you in comparing what you are suggesting to the "arcticstang". AWD is a great idea, but, much like my post about a full frame conversion, is very controversial among many on this board. You have several members on this board who will argue that converting from a carb to fuel injection is a bad idea, although I challenge them to find one person who has done the conversion that is not happy from a performance and efficiency standpoint.

With that being said, both rbohm and 1320stang appear to be realists and people who are receptive to change. 1320stang, in particular, seemed to totally understand my post regarding a full frame conversion and was quite knowledgeable re the same.

With that also being said, you are being far more ambitious than even what I was in suggesting a full frame car. To do an AWD car, I suspect you'd have to install an even beefier full frame frame, as well as incur all the expense associated with conversion to an AWD setup. I hope you have deep pockets to attempt such an undertaking, if you do, and I look forward to seeing the results.

i believe it was a roadster that used the drivetrain off of i think it was a gmc typhoon. the car was featured in summit not too long ago. and it was nice.

no i dont have deep pockets but since i have been working on it for two years already and probably have four or five more to go (or two if its what i tell my girl) . Since i bought a house its been going a lot slower so i figured i would have the time to do some real cool stuff to it. not the snow plow because i live in florida, but its a funny picture. anyway i have plenty of time to do research on the awd and save money to scrounge up some parts here and there. where would i find some info on this???
i have only posted on here a couple times but the guys in here are cool
i know everyone likes something different and they are just messing with me. my friend has two that are restored to original.
i want to use as many ford parts as possible. someone told me that the old ford 4x4's used a transfer case for the front wheels that i could put in behind my tranny if i modified the floor pans and if i can find one but i would still have to find a way to make the front wheels turn. chop up a cobra irs ????

Yeah, I hear you on that, it seems like it's either house or car. My story is that I've had the car since I was 15 (I'm twice that now) and after I left for college Dad took care of it for me - just started it from time to time. Well, I lost him almost 2 years ago and I bought a house just after. Then my mother springs on me "take the Mustang or I'm going to sell it" so I had to. Priorities kind of shifted from house to fixing rust on the car at that point.

Good luck with explaining it to your girl - I tell mine this is the only car I'm ever gonna resto(mod), so I want to do it right.

Just kiddin' on the snowplow - I bet if you get it done your AWD 'stang could whup some Subaru WRX STi butt.

i bought a house with a carport so i have to make it a garage. both of my toolboxes are in the sunroom. i figured i would do the garage with in a month or so well that didnt happen.
i didnt think about how much i would have to stiffen the frame. im also shaving the drip rails and the door handles. i dont really know hoe the awd would work i just have ideas.
my car was owned by a surfer kid so the front was real rusty. it had a straight 6 and auto. no a/c .

If you wanted to keep the stock (or lower) ride height you'd probably be looking at ripping the guts out of a modern AWD - including the engine! Perhaps do an SN65 with the donor AWD!

Sounds like a big job, but if it could be pulled off it would be worth it.

you might have to look at somthing in the neighborhood of an old school AWD like 80's subaru wagon, also mitsubishi 3000gt and some old eclipses i beleive had AWD kids wreck those all the time

i have a 67 fastback.
i was looking on the net today and found an awd explorer '91 it was probably a 4x4 and they just miss printed it. i also found an awd tempo and aerostar van but they woulnt have stron enough stuff in them.

Other than a coolness factor, ask yourself what you're going for.

This is not a project for those that do not have extreme experience. You cannot just dive feet first into an AWD conversion on a unibody car that wasn't designed for power going to the front two wheels. Many, Many modifications are required on a Mustang to allow such a system to work.

Then you have the fabrication of parts. Do you have a milling machine? Lathe? A good set of air cutoff tools, with at least a 30 gallon tank. This is NOT going to be a bolt on application type modification.

So you tell me.... if I dump 5k into converting my car into AWD, while at the same time, my buddy dumps 5k into his motor and suspension... sure my car might have AWD, but my buddy just walked out on me and there's no chance of me ever catching up.

At the risk of sounding close minded what would be the point of making an AWD classic Mustang? It could be done but to do it rightwould be very expensive for little real benefit.

By the way the AWD car you guys are talking about is the QuadraDeuce. It is a radical 32 Ford originally unveiled in 1995. Recently, the car was redone by Rad rides by Troy.

My first thought would be to use a wrecked Audi as a starting point. They have well built and designed suspension that's made to handle - many are arguably among the best in the world. Also many of them have pretty strong powerplants, so the axles and CV joints could handle V8 power. Better than using a pickup or Subaru, IMO. The downside is parts will be more expensive and harder to find.

The Ford 500 could probably handle a mild V8 build as long as you didn't abuse it. You might want to wait 5+ years so you don't have to spend a mint on nearly new parts, though.

youre right 351carlo i would be upset if i spent the money and the time and got spanked.
and no i dont have all those tools.
i started out wanting to do an air ride suspension with the fatman fabrication front suspension and a solid rear axle.
i have a V8 rearend out of a 68 and a V8 rearend out of a 92. then i thought about putting a 99 or so cobra irs in it. then i saw the quadradeuce and you all know what happened from there.
if its not worth the money , and not going to make a huge difference then i wont spend the time researching it.
i want this thing to hook-up like its going to rip your head off and handle like --a cat on carpet-- to quote a mustang magazine i have. if you have any ideas about how to get both of these done let me know, and yea i know its not easy to do.
i have a 331 stroker with trick flow heads,airgap intake,holley 600 for now,havent figured out what cam to use because im really eyeballing that paxton supercharger.
any ideas?????
