I have a question. I have a 1969 Mustang Fastback with the 351 Windsor engine in it. I am redoing this car. I bought it in 1973, and had the engine overhauled in 1976. Since then, only 600 miles have been put on it. It has always been garaged, so I thought I might start working on the ol girl. I need to put all new brake lines on it, and have only 2 choices for oem brake lines. My question is if there is anyway to figure out the axel splines without pulling the axel? It is either a 28 or 31 spline axel. I am not sure what difference this makes, but there must be some reason why they ask. It has the 9 inch drums front and back. If I had the money, I would go all disk, but thats some cash layout. Maybe sometime down the road maybe. Thanks.

You most likely have 28 spline axles. I'm sure someone will chime in. The axles are not hard to pull at all, if it's been sitting that long it might not be a bad idea to pull and check the axles, and replace those seals while your in there. With a slide hammer you can literally pull both in a half hour.

Is the rear a 8" or 9"?

If it's an original 351 car it should be a 9".

Like mentioned, it's most likely a 28 spline. Pulling the axle out is a 1hr job at best.
Your local ford dealership should be able to decode the axle tag if it's still in place.

If it's original, it's 9" 28 spline. The 31 was seen only on cars that had "BOSS" or "Cobra Jet" displayed on them.

I believe it is a 9 because I also have a 1987 mustang gt and the pumpkin looks to be smaller than on the 69. Now maybe that is not a good measure, but the car is stock when I bought it in 1973, so any upgrades were done by me over the years as in boring, shaving, and high rise manifold, new pistons and high lift cam. I never touched the rear, and I do believe at one time the axel ratio was 3. something, but the tag was taken off and discarded. That was stupid of me. It has the four speed tranny in it, if that will help. All answers are good, and hopefully it will help me rekindle some of the fire I had when I was younger to get this thing done.

Thanks for the links. As I looked that both of the links, my axel does have the rectangle slot in the axel. Now I know which brake set to buy. Thanks. I have taken some pics of it just to match up with the others in the links.
