I've been recommended to upgrade to 31 spline axles. The recommendation was "since you're gonna do gears soon, this would be the best time to upgrade axles." Since I'm starting to add engine mods, this seems like a wise investment(correct me if I'm wrong). It looks as if there are different lengths for the Mustang, is this true? What is the correct length for a stock rear GT?

Any recommendations for axle brands?

This is a street car non-daily driver. 2000 GT. Thanks

I'm not sure what you mean by "length for a stock rear GT", but the stock gears are 3.27 and the differential is 8.8 inches. If you plan on running drag radials or slicks in the future, you should upgrade the diff and axles if you have the extra cash. You could get moser 31 spline axles and a 31 spline trac-loc from ford. That would hold up good.

I was referring to the axle length, I think I saw 2 different lengths for axles(it's possible it could have been a Fox Body axle).

I just got my rear end refreshed and kept the stock axels and housing....just rebuilt the limited slip, new bearings throughout. The car puts down high 1.68's to 1.72's on DR's and I have 80,000 miles on the car....just upgraded to a ta rear girdle also and the axels still look good! It is an auto with a 3200 stall with a shift kit. The problem that breaks stock axels is when you get more tracktion with one axel through the limited slip. If you put a slick on and dump a 5 sp say at 5,000 rpms you could be asking for trouble because if one side loads it could twist, warp, or break! Put tracktion to it evenly and you will be straight! I know of people pulling 1.3 60fts on stock axels and have hundreds of passes at the track with out issues!

There are 2 different axle lengths post Fox Body.

94-98 and 99-04.

you need to get the ones that correspond to teh 99-04 rear ends cause they are a bit longer than teh 94-98 ones

What can you do to make it run like it has an open rear while keeping the limited slip for street use? I dont know too much about rear ends so I apologize for asking if this is not possible. I know you need the limited slip for turns, and an open rear is good for straight line, but how can you run an open rear at the track with a limited slip on the street without actually swapping parts out?

ford Racing has 31 spline axles but for a LSD a detroit tru-trac, eaton or a FRPP trac-lok would be a good choice
