I just finished my research on this topic. I too have a fmx with the b&m star shifter. I have only seen 1 guy on the boards with this setup -no offense to the owner (the guy who owns the car did not do the setup) it did not look to be the best setup. The problem is the shifter is cable driven - meaning it pushes and pulls, the fmx linkage is upside down compared to the C4 -

If you can reroute the cable to come from front towards the back you can hook it up sortof - you still need a place to mount the bracket to hold the cable (This is the part that I have no place to mount anything) And last the (sorry dont know the name) little arm that comes out of the tranny is pressed onto the tranny, so you will have a hard time hooking the cable to the actual arm to shift on the tranny.

With that said - I do have a brand new B&M starshifter for sale...

I'd go ahead and put it in. It doesn;t take long, and if it works, you're all set.
If it doesn;t work, scrap it and get a nice C4 or AOD. The FMX is a heavy (cast-iron) trans that draws alot of parsitic power loss to run. It was a truck tranny from the 1950s that Ford hurriedly decided to put behind the 351Ws when they realized the old C4s would probably cause to many warranty issues. C4s have come along way and now many surpass the C6s in durability, as well as blowing them away in terms of weights and power drain.

That is prob. going to be my plan - hang onto the shifter and purchase a c4 at some point - I dont think they are all that expensive prob. $200-$300 for a used one. Question - I have a 351W in my 68 stang -- when looking for a c4 - am I too look for a certain housing over another? Obviously it needs to bolt up to a 351W, but what about the teeth? Do they differ?

my B&M shifter (Pro Stick) came with a bracket that replaces the factory shift arm. Actually, it came with an assortment of brackets to fit just about anything. You can orient it any way you want, thus eliminating any cable routing issues.

not as easy as you would think - I too got all the brackets... You'll see what i mean when you go to hook it up. But hey, if you get luckier than I - show up some pics so I can see how you did it.
