I just rebuilt my motor. Its a 306 basically stock rebuild with the exception of a B303 cam and ported and polished stock heads. Im having trouble with the timing. It seems that no matter where i move the distributer the timing doesnt change. I have no timing light and im trying to go by ear. The car surges a little which i expect but it also seems to run rough at low rpms like when im cruisin in 3rd, and sometimes it dies when i take my foot off the gas and coast. Is there something else other then timing that i should be looking at?

If it's a speed density car, it will never run right with a cam that much bigger than stock (I know people who have tried) unless you have a custom made computer. Convert it to mass air and everything should be cool.

That cam will run rich at idel and lean up top and prolly suge like mad. SD is cammable but you need a wide lsa to let it pull strong vaccume at idel. the crower 15511 is a great cam for sd.

What they said and borrow a timing light cause you'll never get it right going by ear.

Get a timing light

Do yourself a favor. Go buy a cheap timing light. Anything else could be bad. You'll never time the car right without a timing light....or a vacuum gauge (oldtimers method).
