I just recently installed my bassani o/r x and ever since I have, when I downshift, or rev in neutral up past about 2500~3000 RPM I get backfiring. Especially if I downshift and the revs go up to about 3000 it sounds like a gun going off, why is this??? Does it have something to do with the lack of cats?

no, i just put new timing chain, water pump, plugs, rotor, and dist. cap last week, timing is not the issue.

Is it actual backfiring or is it just popping? It's normal to have popping after installing an o/r mid-pipe, since it has no cats, it's just the unburnt fuel igniting in the pipes.

If your sig is still up to date it's probably because of the flows matched to the Bassani o/r x. I'm assuming your getting a hell of a drone too?

Have someone stand behind your car when you do this and see if there are fire balls coming out of your tail pipes. Its probably just excess fuel.

Check for leaks. I've been told that cool air sucked threw holes in the pipes can cause popping during decel.

When I had my LT headers put on and got the car back to take it to have the rest of the exhaust put on, I had 'gunshots' every 3 or 4 seconds, people would look at me like I was crazy. Turns out my mechaninc reversed two of the plug wires Anyways, we just turned them around and all was fine and I got my power back. It's amazing because that was the first thing that should have crossed my mind, but it never did until he mentioned it...

backfiring IS unburnt fuel igniting in the pipes isnt it? the light popping on decel is not necessarily igniting fuel since my MAC cat back system used to do it lightly with the stock h pipe, now with the o/r h pipe i get this much louder than before, but actual backfire is much louder and should not occur very often unless heavy throttle shifting, or downshifting

Alright two things. Cats (or a lack thereof) shouldn't have any effect on an exhaust except for maybe a few more horsies . Second, I know you said you just did your timing and all of that wonderful stuff last week, but find a light and check the timing anyways. Unless your O2s aren't hooked up right it's the only thing I can come up with.

I get the popping same as you do. My timing is also dead on. I don't think its anything to worry about.
