So I went to the track on thursday(Irwindale 1/8) and was hitting 9.10@78 mph with an AOD. I was doing the AOD shuffle (yeah I know bad for the tranny) and it did fine up until today. I drove 42 miles to my mom's house and the car ran fine. I go to leave and all of a sudden it starts slipping. Pulled over and checked tranny fluid and it was full. Well I left and got on the freeway and then I lost OD. Got off the freeway and just started taking the streets home. When I was about 10 miles from home I lost third and made it the rest of the way home with just first and second. Got to the stoplight about a mile from home and go to leave on green and it just slipped like crazy and started moving really slow. Looks like it's time for a trip to the junkyard.

might be too late, but sometimes if you burn the fluid it will jam the filter and the car won't shift the way its supposed to. change the fluid and the filter. DO NOT do a tranny flush. that will just pump debris through your transmission and make everything worse.

Yeah I know that is why I ain't pissed. I knew it was bound to happen. It was just a matter of time. At least I get to clean up the tranny and clean the underside of the car. Damn AOD shuffle

can't drive stick due to injuries in Iraq. If not I would so I have to stick with an automatic. Just trying to find a junkyard replacement better suited for street/strip use. I want to go the c4 route but I have no idea how to make one work

Personally if the funds allow I would do a nice rebuild on the AOD or get another one, swap it in and rebuild the one you have now. The later AODs are the best ones to get since they had solved some of the issues by then.

You can get them from Grand Marquis, LTDs, Mustangs and some other vehicles. The ones that are in the Lincolns have a longer tailshaft and you will have to shorten the driveshaft. I swapped one out of an 89 Grand Marquis into my 93 after I burned up the OD band. Swapped the higher rpm governor, my valve body with a shift kit and put an A+ OD servo in and its all good. You can check over on Click Click Racing and see what they have to say as well. Lots of good auto trans tech over there.

I like to keep the OD if the car is gonna be driven for more than just track purposes.

Well thanks for your service, we appreciate it. on the next note, i good rebuild would be far better than pulling a junkyard unit, if you like doing the tranny shuffle so bad TCI offers an awesome paddle shifter kit that converts the AOD to a paddle shifter on the steering wheel, my buddy has one and its awesome

I agree if you are going to do a rebuild then do it right and do it the way you want. A decent converter 3K+ stall along with a manual valve body, for drag purposes it's better than a manual and honestly a lot of fun to drive, a whole hell of a lot better than a stock slushcan AOD.

I wouldn't recommend swapping in a non OD unit just for the sheer fact that I don't drive my Dart as much as I'd like because it has just a three speed auto in it. I went from 4.10's to 3.23's and now it cruises a lot easier, but it lost so much low end its not much fun to drive anymore. If you can just swap in a build AOD I would do that.
