Change your oil, and see if the ticking goes away. It could be from the low oil level. Metal flakes.... Sounds like it might be time for a rebuild.

yeah the ticking could be from low oil...change that out and see how that goes...then you need to find out where the oil is going....

thats what i have been lookin for, but not sure what i want, i could buy a complete reman 5.0 from stangparts.com for 1750$. but thats really not going to do me much more then what i have now. yes it will get rid of my problems, but no it wont get me anymore power. what could i throw together for around 2000$?

Start by finding the problem. If you want to get the car back on the road quickly, then I suggest yanking the intake main. & valve covers, and inspecting for damage on the cylinder heads & lifters/pushrods. Probably be a good idea to remove the heads and have them checked out professionally too. The damage may be very noticable though. If everything is 100%, then assume you need to rebuild the short block.

You can get forged crank/rods/pistons for $1500 pretty easily. Probably less if you shop around. Then take the rest of the money, invest in a used block($50), an engine rebuild kit and start building yourself a new short block. You could probably finish it with $2000.

People that have done this may have a better estimate though.

why buy another block?

Reuse what you got.

If you want a little more power, get a 327 rotating assembly.

Standard bore(if your bores are good), or go 331(.030 over in your bore if they need to be re-bored).

The kit will cost you about $1300, add $250 for machine work and $110 for all gaskets and what not.

Stock heads? With the rest of the money I would invest in a dremel, and some new valve guides/seats. AKA PORTING TO DEATH!

Make sure the ticking noise is not a blown header gasket or some other exhaust leak. At start up you would swear my has a ticking Roller rocker or something like that but its just an exhaust leak by the header.
