Bad Throw Out Bearing

What usually are the symptoms of a throw out bearing that's going bad?

it will squeek really bad.. and when they are tottaly gone they will make a really bad grinding metal sound when you push in the clutch with the engine running..

I'm starting to get an occasional squeaking sound that goes away when I push in the clutch pedal...I've also had to have it greased 4 times in 2 months because I keep getting a scraping feeling in the pedal when it's pushed in...

Yea it's the TOB. Don't worry about that POS. It won't cause any problems. Just have a new one put in whenever you get a new clutch

Or if the car has a factory warrenty take it to them and they'll fix it.

The car just got a new clutch about 6-8 months ago...king cobra...the bearing wasn't replaced when it was done.

you should always replace the TOB when doing a clutch i do just for assurance that it wont sqeak

Mine is squeaking like a mofo, sounds like a bunch of crickets in my car.

Mine sounds like millions of crickets at times but sometimes it barely chirps at all. When I push the clutch in, it goes away but if you have the windows up and radio off, it sounds slightly like speaker feedback (when clutch is pressed). Our TOB's are for the lose.

wait so if the ToB goes out... the car will be ok for oh say 2k miles before a replacement?

I keep meaning to replace mine, but I wanted to get a new clutch too, and just haven't made up my mind on my future mods (so I can't decide on a clutch)...

Mine does the nice squeal for about 10 miles after startup when the clutch is out.... sadly I get an occasional clunking rattling now lately when the clutch is out as well for a few minutes now too...

Doesn't do it if the car is hot... I know its the ToB, no doubt, I just wonder how much longer I can run it... I'd like to hold out until tax returns so I can go all out and have the clutch replaced, k-swap, and coil overs all done at the same time...

My 99GT did it and my 99 Cobra does it too. Both cars the cricket noise would go away with just the slightest pressure on the clutch pedal and never did it when the car was in gear. The GT did it since the day I bought it with 50K on it till the day I sold it with 65K on it. The clutch quadrant/firewall adjuster did help it some, it used to do it all the time, now it only does it once in a while.

When the Cobra needs a clutch I will have the TOB replaced too, till then...whatever not gonna mess with it.

TOB wont hurt anything

Just replace it whenever you put in your new clutch. No worries.

How about a squeal when the clutch is disengaged? It's a '98 conv, btw.

I've had intermittent squeals as I engage the clutch over the past 2 weeks (all gears), but usually only the first few minutes after I've started up. But yesterday I disengaged and started up (in 1st) and the thing squealed with the pedal fully depressed - stopped when I moved off.

Any ideas? TOB, belt? I installed a new PI intake last month and put the original belt back on as it looked to be in good condition. Couldn't be that simple a fix, could it?

yeah me too! I bought my car used so I will finally find out what clutch was installed by the last owner, then I will know every part on it haha. anywho I just ordered a spec stage 1 clutch with TOB and pressure plate for 200 on partshopper. and at my dealership I only have to pay 30 per hour labor

The whole issue is retarded to say the least. I have the same chirp as everyone else, and on top of that my cable/quadrant is screwed up and the pedal has about an inch of freeplay and chatters like crazy on occassion. Really makes the car no fun to drive sometimes, its been like this since I got it over a year ago, and I put all new bearings, disc and pressure plate in 2 weeks after I got the car, and 5k miles later it started again. I bought the car with 62k, it has almost 88k now...26k miles with a chirping TOB. If I didnt love mustangs, this car would be gone.

You really need to replace the TOB when you do a clutch. The old TOB has certain wear on it from the old clutch, mating it to a new clutch makes things get noisey. As you can see.

Time for a new TOB
