I just found and purchased this 66. Been in storage since 85. Has SCCA suspension and all Ford parts. Has a CHROME 9 in., chrome trunk hinges, chrome bumper brackets (you'll have to ask the previous owner), lots o spare stuff, both original and race aftermarket, like race seats and fuel cell. Owner had intentions of making it a showcar/race car (see tag).Don't know about the fiberglass front flared fenders. Don;t see those installed anymore. Seems it would take a huge tire to make them look right. Huge flares in back as well. Originally a 4 bbl automatic car, so its not a rare breed. What do you guys think I should do with respect to bringing it back to life? I want to keep all the suspention pieces, its all TCP good stuff, front and rear. Gimme some feedback please,

Outlaw

Those flares were pretty standard back then. The biggest tires you could buy were 16" that came factory on the Corvette. 15" was a standard tire size. So if you wanted wider tires, you only had one option - get fender flares and go out.

Common offsets back then were 3 3/4" with widths as wide as 12"..........

Today, we have other tire choices.

Are you gonna keep the flares and put like 17x11 in the rear and 17x9 in the front or what?

WOW! Looks great for sitting 22 years!!!! Little extreme with the front flares though. All-in-all, a great find!

I'm gonna keep the flares on the back for sure cause I don't want to replace the fenders, but I'm not sure on the front. As you said, with the tire choices we have now, I don;t need them, and a front fender is pretty easy to replace. The car is painted in lacquer so matching the paint should be fairly easy....I'm just not to certain on the quality of the fit on repop fenders. I'll have to look at some tire options with those fenders to see what it looks like. Is anybody still using those huge flares anymore? I checked some old magazines and those things were being pulled off in the mid to late 90's. I'm toying around with a clone SCAA racer look. Don;t really know what to do with the car. I'm selling my Cobra replica to build this one as I feel the 66 will be more valuable in the next 5 years. Really straight body on the car, never wrecked. Only damage is on the right front fender where the PO's sister hit it with the mirror of her car and gouged it a bit. Car was painted in 85, top and bottom, and then parked.

I haven't even gone through all the boxes yet.

I'm not a fan of the flares (you seem to have your doubts yourself as well ) but a cool find nonetheless.

You said it had TCP suspension parts. I didn't think they were already around in 1985?

Good luck with it.

You can buy OEM fenders now that drop on just like new. They may seem a little pricey, but weighed against the cost of the bodywork to get a good fit with the offshore ones and they are quite reasonable.

Man, I think I'd be temped to leave it as is and go road racing. I don't think I'd sell the Cobra either, keep both. That car isn't too far away from being race worthy IMO. Replace rubber lines and suspension pieces, put wheels and tires that fit the flares, you really don't need more than about 300hp/300tq to go road race, especially if you've never done it before.

yeah i think i'd leave the flares and put some huge by wide rubber on it and make a retro canyon carver/pro touring type car out of it. these cars were often referred to as cafe racers back in the late 70's/early 80's and are the origins of the pro-touring movement, a lot of the PT guys still realy like this look including me. i think a 17x9 with some 275's up front and a 17x11 with some 315's out back would look sharp.

here's some inspiration for you

OK, you asked so here it is. Looks like a great car but I hate the flares. I don't care for the extra chrome either. Figure out what you like and do it your way. Nobody else really matters.

White is the absolute hardest paint color to match or blend. If you're planning on just spotting the fenders and expect it to match, plan on respraying the whole car.

The "OE Ford Tooling" fenders and hoods are the best of the aftermarket pieces, but still don't fit and require lots of work to fit.

I think I'd absolutely do an OG early 1980's canyon carver out of it with modern tire sizes and big brakes. I'm thinking Viper tire fitments front and rear.......

are those glass fenders or is that a mix between fiberglass, bondo and steel? If they are all glass, I would probably be willing to trade for my oem fenders. Nice find anyways. (I do like the flares and the "canyon carver" look, then I could fit 275s up front to match the 315s going in the rear.)

Here is my very dirty 67 with the 80's flares. Bought the car from a friend a few years back. I'm still not 100% on the flares, but over time they can grow on you.

Front tire size 265x50x15
Rear tire size 295x50x15

Fiberglass to metal with filler to smooth. A little rough on the backside, but its held on since the 80's. I like how the rear flares look (hard to see in the pic), but those fronts...a little too much "bubble effect" for me.

Cool find BUT if you remove the fronts you just as well remove the rears!! The car will look way out or proportion (or just to 70's ish) with just the rear flairs.
