I want to buy a kit to move my battery to the trunk. Who's done this and whose kit did you buy. No, I don't have the ability to make my own. I notice Summit has one for less than $50. Good enough?
I have summit's kit. It has everything you need and doesnt look too bad installed. I grounded it straight to the rear strut base plate for my cage and have no problems at all.
I dont have the cap on the box in that picture but you can get the idea.
As long as the seat is up in back it will do fine. When you go to the strip.... just kidding. I don't know rules for track days, but they may require more robust enclosure for a FB car to pass tech. Remember that it is a projectile if it comes lose in an accident. There is also the explosion factor caused by the release of hydrogen by a wet cell battery (not common though).
I had a cheap Summit kit in my 92 5.0 Notch, and it was black plastic. It worked, but it wasn't anything special. I was on a budget though, so I couldn't get one of the nicer aluminum or s/s ones.
Thanks for the pic... that's what I envisioned. My only concern was it's ability to stay put when I autocross. My buddy had one in his 91 fastback and didn't express any concerns. He also autocrossed.
The one I just ordered was the one from Summit. Just like the one showed in the above pic.
I used a cheapo kit with:
A tray
2 hold down bolts
1 hold down strap
1 long red cable
1 short black cable
You have to bolt the tray to the rear frame rail.
Run the hold down bolts through the tray.
Put the strap on top of the battery, with the bolts going through it.
Mount the ground cable to the frame rail.
Run the red cable through the body up to the front.
If you take your door sills off, you can run the cable from the trunk and through the sills and out the front fender in one easy stretch.
The fact that everything is bolted down to the rear frame rail keeps everything secure in any situation.
You don't need a box as long as you have an actual trunk that is separated from the passenger compartment.
If you have a hatchback, fold down seats, removed back seat, or holes in the rear deck or seats... then you will need a box with road draft tube to control any stray fumes.
I had alot of trouble with grounds. I found that I had to reinstall some stock ground straps and that relocating the starter solenoid to the trunk helps things.
