You mentioned that you just installed some gauges and you didn't have the dash entirely back together? If this is true, one thing to check is your factory ammeter. If the ammeter is not connected your alternator will not charge your battery. I know it sounds goofy but the signal wire for turning on the alt is also connected to your ammeter signal wire.
