I was looking at a Be Cool electric fan, well any electric fan for my 1965 mildly modified 289. The thing is it says it's universal, and when I hear universal I think of modifying the brackets or any of the mounting devices. I have a stock style radiator with extra fins. I'm just asking if anyone has installed an electric fan and if there was any modifying that you had to do?

i put on 2 16" pusher/puller fans on my BE COOL radiator I got from the swap meet, universal type.I made my own brackets out od aluminum strap from Home Depot. You can use the push through platic ties, but they eat into the core with vibration. They are very easy to install.

So it would be easy to attach to a stock radiator?

I would seriously save the money and go to the junkyard with measurements. 12sec67 and I both have junker fans and they work fine. I think he paid 20 bucks, and I got mine for free.

BeCool stuff is way way too expensive, and there fans are not powerful enough to properly meet the requirements of a small block ford with a single fan which is really all you can fit on one side of our small radiators. I recommend the Permacool 16" H.P. electric fan. It is part number 19115. It flows almost 3000cfm which is about where you want to be for up to a 350 cubic inch v8. works great for my "mildly" modified 289 as well.

Edit:Oh yeah, its about 99 dollars. i got mine from jegs.com great price for the performance and it fits well between a 3 row and your waterpump.

The be cool isn't going to perform under back pressure due to the narrow blades, you can see that by how little the current rises as it's run under pressure. The permacool cfm ratings are off by a mile, I doubt that they get half what they claim. Some of the jy fans are great, but I can't think of a good one that will fit that small of a radiator

Go with either a derale 16818 or 16926. I have both of these in the lab, both have a real blade design in lieu of the paddle wheels and both have very high peak to average current motors, so the efficiency is high.

I've used two of those and really recommend it. THey're so powerful it almost sounds like a small aircraft. Think of a low-pitch flex fan coupled to a high-speed electric motor. Months after painting my car I replaced my flex fan with the Permacool and it blew sanding dust and other crap from the engine compartment that I didn't even know was there. The problem I had with one was the allen screw loosened up and the fan ended up rubbing on my radiator. The new versions have the fan blade pinned by a lock washer onto the shaft to prevent it from coming loose.

CFM ratings from fan manufacturers' advertisements have no set standards to base comparisons from, therefore it is a poor way to choose a fan.

No, any ligitimate manufacturer understands how to rate the cfm of a fan and the link that I posted even shows how to calculate it, it's not exactly rocket science. If you just want to plug the numbers in, here's a better link http://www.dccontrol.com/fcfm.htm The ratings generated are for a variable pitch blade design, 50% blade coverage, and assumes a 10% loss from nonuniform flow.

The one you're referring to isn't a high power motor with a low blade pitch, it's a low powered motor with about three times the correct pitch for a 9.8A motor. The aircraft noise that you're referring to is from a poor blade design, not airflow capability, but even if the blade was sized properly, with the motor size and blade diameter of that fan, the highest theoretical airflow that could be attained is a little over 2000 cfm. As I stated before, the airflow for that fan is realistically about 1500 cfm.

Well since according to u, these figures are all wrong, which i cant contest since i dont know, then i guess it would be safe to compare this fan against other permacool fans that have lower cfm ratings. and thats what i did. and the point of all of this is: THE FAN EFFECTIVELY COOLS MY ENGINE!!, which is a 289 bored .30 over with a hot cam, reworked heads, aftermarket intake and carb. therefore, this fan must be ok, especially for the money! it does the job well. and i think that is all we are interested in here.

No, not according to me, according to basic, first semester physics, If you want to contest it, the mathematics are in the same link that I posted, have at it.

So, your logic then is that because permacool incorrectly rates that fan higher than they incorrectly rate their other fans, then it must be good?!! And that although the 22A, 16” blade 2400 cfm becool fan that will fit his car won't cool his car, because it’s not powerful enough, the 9.8A, 15” blade 1500 cfm fan with the wrong pitch that you chose will cool his car, well, because it cools your car? I take it that logical thinking isn't one of your strong points.

You may not like or even comprehend the advice that I gave, but it's good, well informed advice. The derale fan is the same price as the permacool, is a better design and flows more air.

One thing i hate more than anything, is when someone like you gets on here and gets all fired up over this kind of thing. this is a discussion and maybe im reading more into what you are saying, or maybe you are just too emotional, but when you throw and insult like" logical thinking isnt one of my strong points" out there, it just proves you are a straight *******. no ifs ands or buts. i didnt insult you, i just simply stated that it works for me, so for anyone with a similar setup, it should work for them. and obviously im not the only one this fan has worked for. chill out. i am a well educated person who is confident in my whits. people like you dont need to post on here if you are gonna throw out insults and act like you are superior to everyone, and nothing is up for discussion. im sure the "experts" at the multi million dollar company perma cool might have a good argument for the genious that is you, but im not here to debate physics. im talking about a real world example. period. i still just cant believe how easy it is for you to throw out such a degrading statement. if i saw you in person, im sure you wouldnt have such a mouth

I think I'll see what they have at the junkyard and try rigging up an electric fan on my stang when I change my water pump.

Yeah, I really don't care what you hate, you gave the guy bad advice, and looking at other threads that you’ve posted to, you seem to not care whether or not you lead the person asking a question in the wrong direction as long as it allows you to pretend to be an expert on the subject matter. As far as I can discern, the objective here is to pass on good advice, and the best advice that I could give the person posting the question was not to take your advice, and to give him my suggestion which was based on fact, not unfounded speculation. In lieu of reading my post and actually learning something, you’re answer to that was to argue your case with the logic and reason of a domestic cat, without any regard as to whether or not the person ended up with the correct information. I simply pointed that out, so quit whining.

As far as being emotional, I’m not the one typing in capital letters and asterisks and puffing my chest out like I’m some kind of a tough guy, I’m just stating the facts. If I’m not allowed to post here, its certainly not your decision to make, so if you didn’t like my post, you’ll just have get over it.

BS, you were the one who said "well according to first year physics blah blah blah, I'm right" implying oh look at me I've done first-year physics so I must be the most intelligent being in the universe, along with "I take it logic isn't one of your strong points." Both of which verify that you are indeed puffing your chest out and being an Internet tough-guy. Emphasising what you are saying by using punctuation and capitalised letters is totally different to being a jerk. I take it that understanding the finer points of communication are not your strong point. (hmm where have I heard something like that?)

The man stated that the fan he used did a good job of cooling his hotted up 289, which is notorious, especially when overbored, for overheating more easily than any other smallblock - hence if it cools a hotted up, overbored 289, it'll pretty much be good for any SBF.

Having taken a first semester physics class isn’t exactly a bragging point, I never claimed that I was the most, or even intelligent at all, people can decide that for themselves. My point, which is obviously beyond your level of understanding, was that anyone with common sense who is willing to think it through could understand it, particularly given that the work has already been done and spelled out for their viewing. Most anyone in this thread, other than you two clowns, could have easily done the same work that I did themselves.

Neither of the two verify what you claim, which is no surprise to me, as you evidently don’t have even the basic cognitive skills necessary to verify whether or not you’ve zipped your fly up, let alone interpret someone else’s statements. Speaking of communication skills, ever heard of spell check or paragraph structure? I realize that English is most likely not your first language, but you need to at least try to get close enough to get your half baked point across.

And why would that be? A 289 is no different than any other small block Ford, other than the fact that it has a shorter stroke, cast iron heads, and in most cases, no air conditioning system, all of which tend to make it run cooler. The fact of the matter is that a 289 isn’t notorious for running hot by anyone's standards. Like your friend, you have no valid point to make, and your absurd rhetoric doesn’t fool anyone.

Baskin, your equations appear impressive. Could you kindly post your CV. By the way, ever hear of anecdotal evidence?

I’d describe it as more convoluted than impressive, but it gets the point across. CV, do you mean curriculum vitae?

Yes, I agree that if there's a valid proof of something working well, it holds some weight, but I've owned at least a half a dozen early mustangs in just about every state of tune, and the fact that one is easy to cool doesn't imply in any way that another one is. The original choice posed by the starter of the thread wasn’t a terrible one, when another choice that happened to be a poor choice was recommended over it, I pointed that out and gave, what is in my honest opinion, some better choices, and this is what I got.

“i think that is all we are interested in here”

I don’t particularly care that he has no interest in the facts, and it’s certainly not his position to determine what other people are interested in hearing. Most people, including myself, visit the forums in order to learn from other people. This happens to be a particular area that I understand fairly well, and believe that the knowledge is worth passing on given the subject matter that is being discussed, whether he’s interested in learning or not.
