I drive my 01 focus for my commute (75 miles a day) and it gets great mileage. 30+ highway. It's been a great little car, I bought it new and there have been no major issues with it. I have almost 140k on it right now.

You can pick up a used focus for cheap, if i were you, i'd keep my eye out for a manual. The auto's are complete dogs.

Here's my beater, I bought a 95 grand cherokee v8 laredo last year for 4k. Jeep has 141k now and not a single problem. Mine even had these rims with BFG AT's, and 2 inch lift on it. It has the full time 4x4 which is great in rain and snow. It wont get you 30mpg, but with the v8 and awd I still get around 20-22mpg with intake and full exhaust and the 8 only needs 87 oct too which helps. It sounds great now with full 3inch from the headers back through a 3 inch highflow cat, to a 3 inch 2 chamber flow. Seeing as youre in NY you have to battle with winters too. I installed a remote start, set the heat to high or defrost, and the cars ready to go in the morning. Let it run for 10 minutes and no scrapping the windows. Its great haha. Its nice knowing i'm not going to get stuck, and not really worry about the winters anymore. You can find and pick up grand cherokee all over the place from 2-4k and you could even get he inline 6 which run forEVER. It would aslo get a lil better than the 8 would mpg wise. Good luck!

I remember those wheels from working for Discount Tire Company. Forgot the name of them, though... MB Motoring something.. Maybe Razors.

Anywho. I have an AWD Safari van. Great in snow... sucks for mileage (worse then both Stangs) and barely goes 80 MPH... but it does great in snow/ice. That's all I really care about

As a ford guy, I would recomend also the escort, contour or tempo. If you want a sporty looking beater thats pretty quick, look at the ford ZX-2's, with the zetec 2.0 they love to rev and still get close to 40 mpg highway.

Exaclty! I just sold my 99 35th and bought a 1990 accord. I know, I know. Its my first foreign car and will only get 30 mpg unitl I buy an 05 GT next spring. No sense buying it now and driving it in the winter.

What year??

Those vans are pretty reliable, I worked for an outfit that used em as taxis............built tough, gas mileage was ok, handling sucked, but they were comfortable especially with the captains chairs.

Best beater I ever owned was an 86 ford tempo, 240,000 miles, gave it to a guy at church who is still driving it to work.

I can vouch for these cars. My gpa bought one brand new in 93, drove it til my sister got her license in 1999, she drove it for a year, he got it back, then it was given to my aunt when he died and she still drives it to this day. Its probably got more than 300k miles on it.
