i have a 90 lx with vortech sc,the alt is located on the sc bracket on the bottom and i have to rely on the tensioner for tightness of the belt, because the alternator can't be adjusted, its in a fixed position.here's the problem:ever since i went with a 3g 130amp alt,the belt squeals on startup for about 15 seconds then is gone.if i start the car after driving it awhile there is no squeal.the bearings in everything that has a pulley are good, the tensioner also is new,so is the belt which is a goodyear gatorback.all the pulleys appear to be in alignment.all i have is the alt,crank,waterpump,1 idler and a tensioner in place of the power steering pump.someone told me it might be caused by a high load on the alt at startup by the aeromotive a1000 fuel pump and by my mini high torque starter drawing power from the battery and the alt trying to send current to compensate for the draw.its very annoying and if anyones got a solution, please tell me.

i was out of wd 40 but i did try soap on the edges and that quieted it down somewhat,at least to a level i'm able to live with.to my eye, everything looks like the belt travel is perfect, not off anyplace that i can see,so why then are edges of the belt making the squeal?do belts have to be broken in?i don't know anything about belts !

My experience: I had a horrible belt squealing issue. It seemed like no matter what I did, I could not get the belt tight enough at the tensioner. At one point I was literally standing on the engine putting all of my weight on a baseball bat, down to the tensioner, while my wife tightened it down. (Picture that!)

I finally said enough is enough and found a way to use a C-clamp to tighten it down. No more squealing!! Nothing makes you feel more self conscious in your own car than rolling around with a screamer like that.
