I think I would look into World Products for a 351w based crate engine.

Just out of curiosity, how did your 69 end up with a 351m/400?

The 400 is a taller deck Cleveland based v8 with a big block bolt pattern built by ford for trucks in the mid 70s to replace the 390FE.

The 351m ("modified") is a destroked 400.

The only parts interchangable with the 351c are the heads.

yes dan is correct. When i purchased the car it came with it. The original owner gave the car to his brain dead son. He blew the 351w apart racing it (the block had a huge crack in it). looked like a piston blew at high RPM's, so he swapped the engine out of his truck into it. it was silver jade but after 1/8 of an inch of paint it was black w/ flame on the front. the engine oil is contaminated. im gonna change it 2-3 more times and clean the pan and pump to drag a few hundred more miles out of it. its trailer park trash now but im gonna bring her back as close as i can. but if im gonna put a new engine in it i may as well go for it.

thanks for the lesson, i feel like i learned something today, i never new ford put out a 400...if u crack open Summit or Jegs, both have Ford Racing 351's and World Product 351 and 427 short and and long block, neither are on the cheap though...are u not intrested in building up from the short block?

that's a new one for me, they have some cool offerings. But a 460 based on a 351W!?!??! what are they smoking, or what am I missing?!?

I have heard nothing but good things about the products from DSS-Racing, that is who i bought a built short block from. If you have the money for it I'd recomend a roush crate-engine.

World manufactures their own custom block that allows them to build this combo. It is much beefier than any production 351W block and has 4 bolt mains, heavier webbing, etc.

https://www.pawengineparts.com/

try p.a.w. they are mail order/phone order only but have more stuff than any other distributor ive ever seen.

ive got a 2000 catalouge from them and its 1300 pages i always use it to look up parts or get better detailed specs than what summit or jegs gives out.

in that cat. a 427 stroker long block is $3000(2000 prices) i don't know if its assembled or not(picture had all the parts layed out)

PAW is not in the class with a DSS or World Products engine/kit.

That 460 World is intriguing, isn't it? I keep thinking about that shortblock set up with a tad bit of boost....

I'll agree with that. I may be disecting the terminology too much but when I hear the term "remanufactured" I do think of the guys like PAW or FRPP at the high-end and the local autozone/advanced long-blocks as the mainstream. Remanufactured implies mass produced using stock grade components and stock/OEM type tolerances and attention to detail, and they are priced accordingly. Folks like DSS or CHP (back before they sucked...LOL) are more what I would call "built" or builders. These outfits use high grade parts/components and blueprint everything, and they are priced accordingly as well.

I could have picked up an entire long block for about 50% as much as it cost to get my shortblock from DSS before I got any upgrades at all. With the upgrades to their "Pro-Bullitt" class and the girdle my shortblock cost 3X as much as the entire engine from Advanced Auto Parts would have.

So what I am saying is that you have to determine your goals for the engine and weigh that with your budget, you usually get what you pay for, particularly when dealing with reputable companies like all the ones I mentioned (except, debateably, CHP). For a daily-driver or basically stock class car I do think the 'remanufactured' type engines will serve VERY well and provide a long and trouble free service. Just don't plan on pushing too much power through them.

Yeah, there is a LOT of difference about what different people may want/need. I really enjoy 500 rhwp in my daily driver! And I worry that my B50 block 331 forged stroker may not last when we get the Kenne Bell blowing 12psi through the AFR heads into it!. I have thought about a Dart shortblock from DSS to build a turbo motor for my '65.

Some folks are looking for 250rhwp.

We have different needs, and thus we have different vantage points. I tend to go over to the 5.0 boards to deal with the engine issues, as that tends to be a higher-horsepower crowd.

Edbert, your wiring page suggests why this may be the "next wave" in rewiring old cars: http://www.isqe.com/

Anyone who DOES buy one of those Autozone style reman engines would be well advised to check it out thoroughly. I got this book

for Christmas. The author rebuilds a previously re-manufactured engine. He found a lot of marginal quality, e.g., some of the valves were for slotted rockers and some not, and also says he's seen remans with different bores from cylinder to cylinder. I would approach a mass reman engine as a kit, intending to take it all apart and put it all back together again.

And about those World 460's -- one secret is their blocks come in standard bores of 4.000 or 4.125. And both are good for .060 overbores. The 460 starts with a 4.125 bore 9.5" block and punches it out to 4.155. Adding a 4.250 stroker crank gets you to 460. If you used the 4.125 bore, you'd get a 454 with that crank. I'd say the .030 overbore was for marketing reasons. "454 Ford" just doesn't quite sound right. Personally, I'd prefer to keep the first overbore in my pocket, considering the bare blocks go for $2200.

Dart makes blocks in the same sizes; they also make a 4.000 bore aluminum block that can go 427 ci with a standard bore.

Except the bare aluminum Dart block is $4500 bare! That little fact led to my starting the highly controversial thread about swapping an LS2 engine into a classic Mustang. You can buy a very nicely built 408 forged aluminum LS2 shortblock for less than $4500...

Those World crate motors and short blocks do sound interesting. I am not real thrilled about their heads, but the other parts and overall construction cannot be argued with.

Wrong Dan------ the 400 was first produced for the 71 model year in full size Fords and Merc's. It wasn't used in pickups til 1977. Cams, heads, timing set, oil pump, pans, and maybe some other parts interchange with the Clevelands, pistons too with some mods. Right though that the 351M was a destroked 400. I don't see how they got one in a 69 Stang though, must have never got to change the spark plugs. I tried one in a 67 engine bay a few years back. There was ZERO clearance between the heads and shock towers, certainly not enough to access the plugs.
