I am rewiring the car and I have most things connected. It would turn over but not start. I gave it some gas. no start. Went under the hood and gave it mnore gas with the throttle linkage.

Then I realized there was a red wire hanging out of the dist cap that I believe goes to the positive terminal of the starter coil.

I attached it, inserted the key, turned it, the car started and less then a second after starting, I heard the loudest bang I have ever heard. One big pop and I don't recall if it died or if I took the key out.

Didn't sound like the back fire you hear on TV like a mechnical sound or like a cannon. It sounded like I lit an M-80 right next to me.

I giant cloud of white smoke came out of the exhaust as well.

1. Was this a back fire?

2. Is there anything else on a car that could make it make that sound?

3. What caused it?

4. Should I try to start it again?

Yeah that could defintely be it. I had a bad backfire on my 390, i wasnt pulling fuel so I tired to pour a little gas down the carb. It didnt backfire until i open the plates to let air in then ka boom. I couldnt hear for like 10 seconds and it blew my valve cover gromet 25 feet away!
