I started my car last night and got a horrible grinding sound that continued for about 4 minutes after the engine started. It came on as soon as I turned the key. I immediately turned the motor off, but the sound kept going, so I decided to drive it back home and leave it there until I could get it into my local Ford shop. What is wrong?? Is it the starter? I think that is possible since the last few weeks, the engine has taken a few seconds to start...Thanks for any and all help

The sound kept going after your turned the motor off? Weird.

Does anyone know whether or not the fan keeps spinning after you cut the engine? Or maybe you have a FUBARed starter that won't shut off?

Im pretty sure the fan turns off when you turn the car off. If it keeps doing it then Id take the MAF off and bring it to the dealer.

not necessarily..sometimes the fan will continue run after you've shut the motor down..but, fan 'noise' or 'whirl' is not grinding...something is definitely going on..

it still won't be a 'grinding'.. most likely clicking or clacking as the fan blades make contact with whatever is hindering it....depending on how you want to describe it..in my opinion...
