bigger rear drum upgrade?

I have a 67 mustang with 1-3/4"x10" rear drums and i was wondering if anyone had swapped these for larger drum units, like 2-1/4"x10", or larger. I see it was an option on some other mustangs when looking at new drums, and also, is there a better shoe material that would help braking performance, without going to discs? thanks

I use a 2" x 10" rear drum on my race rod and it is plenty of rear brake. Too much and the rear is going to come around in an emergency situation.

I believe that the wheel cylinder must be upgraded as well. Cylinders come in different sized bores to correspond to larger shoes. Bigger shoes require bigger brake nails and possibly springs.

I have a 68 coupe with power drum brakes. They are the 2 1/4 inch wide drums, factory option. I did a complete rebuild of the four brakes including front drums, and wheel cylinders, and I feel my car has a very good braking system. You may want to order the parts for complete over haul and upgrade to the wider shoes and drums. I was able to get my parts from the local auto parts store. This store does alot of local sales to mechanics and the parts counter people have alot of knowledge concerning what parts you need and the cost was lower then I would have paid by using parts from several of the mustang catalogs.

I've never heard the term "brake nails" before, could you please explain - just for my general knowledge fund.

To be honest, when I read the line, I had just finished talking with my daghter regarding her upcoming Rodeo plans this next week. You put "shoe" and "nail" in the same subject while I was thinking about moving her "one-horsepower Mustang" (actually he's a thoroughbred) out to the Rodeo grounds; and I first thought this was a "water pump lesson".

I have the 2 1/2" rear brakes on the Fastback. The backing plates, wheel cylinders, brake shoes, drums, and the "nail-like" pins that go through the backing plate/shoes are the components that are different than the original rear brake parts.

They are called "nails" because they ressemble nails. They have a nail-like head and the other end has a flattened point. They secure the shoe to the backing plate. They were called "nails" when I worked as a salesman for NAPA.

Great! I did get that one right. As I previously posted; I've bought replacements before calling them "the pins that look like nails that hold the shoes on the backing plate". Didn't think there would be an easily descriptive name such as "brake nails".
