Ive heard that ford made a 400 small block for like 2 or 3 years...? Does anyone know if this is true? What is the largest small block ford ever made?
Anyone with sites or ideas were to find info like this for all of the big three would be great.

Thanks,

Ryan

Ford did consider the 400 a small block, even though they are kind of a bulky engine. It is basically the same as a 351M exept the 400 has a longer stroke. These engines found themselves in late 70's early 80's Ford Trucks and some big cars. They are definetly not a motor that belong in a 5.0 Stang if you were thinking about it.

In my Ford Motorsport catalog Ford lists the 400 as being part of the small block family.Hot Rod magazine did a low buck build-up on one a few years back that had very impressive power for around $2000 http://www.geocities.com/styleline58/400.html The whole small block-big block thing is more of a GM thing but if you define a small block as any motor that shares the same cylinder head bolt pattern as a 302 then it is part of the small block family.

and if you define a big block as having the same bell housing bolt pattern as the 385 series 429/460, then it is part of the big block family.
how are you defining small/big block?

Ford's 400 was more big block than small block. Garbage anyway. 351 is the biggest small block they made.
Not really junk. Just different. Not as common. Lower number motor.

Same cylinder spacing as a 302/351/351c/351m but bell bolt pattern like a 460.
Very long stroke in that engine. Good for making lots of torque. With some good pistons, intake and some cleaned up heads, it makes a nice motor. Maybe not for a stang, but great for a 4x4

while we're on this subject, what is the biggest 351 based smallblock you could make? On horsepower TV they took a chevy 350 block and made a 472...just wondering how a ford would compare....

I believe with a block you can bore big like a dart, you can go 454ci with a windsor, not sure of any other possiblilities. hllon4whls, you're right about the 4x4 with the 400, my first rig was a 79 broco with one.
