Does it mean anything if there is somewhat thin layer of black stuff on the inside of the tailpipe. The left side has more than the right by the way. Any ideas?

Thanks...
Kris

No, not lean. Lean would mean there is more air than required to burn the fuel. Likely your situation is opposite, meaning there is more fuel than required for the amount of air present. This leads to gas molecules unburned and in the exhaust, which could (and, likely, would) deposit on the pipes.

running rich ro youre just seeing all the oil that is being burned after getting sucked into your upper intake through your pcv.just got done swaping heads and intake and when i pulled the intake i couldnt believe what i saw.the heads looked even worse,so did the pistons.what a freakin mess.no wonder my car ran like a big pos.hopefully the oil seperator will relieve this problem.

Pull the o2 sensor on that side and check it and see if it is bad. I had the same thing happen to me and i put a new o2 sensor in it and it cured all the problems
