Bleeding 9"

Hello all. I have a 9" built by Quick Performance (I called them about my problem, thay were no help) and it is leaking from the diff vent tube. I have a 4' tube clamped to the vent. The tube wraps around the axel tube, is secured to the top of the chunk, then continues down the other axel tube and ends on the floorboard (picture a tube wrapped around the diff 2 times with its end secured to the bottom of the floor pan with a clamp). I put 2.25 quarts of fluid in the differential (per instructions). Differential fluid spews out of this tube every time I drive, I bet I have lost over 1/2 quart as of now. Fluid is all over the back bottom of the car.. the gas tank... etc... Should I be worried? I kinda am. It is a nodular case with a Eaton True Trac 3.80 ratio. How much fluid do these things take, did I just simply overfill it with 2.25 quarts? Will it drain itself of all oil? WTF?

Hi,

Why all of the length wrapping around the tube? Why not sufficient length to adjust for axel travel?
Also, did you fill to the bottom of the fill hole?

where does the vent exit the axle housing? Also I wouldn't wrap the tube around the axle housing, you may be getting some oil trapped in the low spots, then the pressure will push it out since it can't drain back into the housing.

gotcha. Ill shorten the tube and run it straight up. I have no fill hole to check the fluid levil in the diff, so that sucks. (I just habe one on the very top to add fluid, not to check it). How much fluid should these things take?

The knucklehead in my hometown that worked on my car pinched that tube and used a cheap rubber one. (He is a parts changer not an engineer as I found out). What was happening was that the rear end was overheating and with the tube pinched, started to boil, to hot, and shot fluid all over the place underneath. The solution was to do what Duke said and just have a short tube straight up and then curved so hot air can get out and not overheat the pumpkin but keep dirt out. If I had driven much farther with half the fluid gone, well, you can imagine. I saw something on the Internet blog or advertisement on what to put in to prevent "bubbling" or overheating while maintaining proper lubrication for the rear end gears. Check around. I can provide and answer on Monday. (My pro-race mechanic doesn't have a cell phone or Internet service).

All nodular cases have fill holes in them. I suggest as the others, shorten the hose and hook it back up as it was stock.

The fluid should just come to the lip of the fill hole 2/3 way up the 3rd member. Add fluid until it begins to run out, you are full put the screw plug back in. Untangle that mess, run the hose up from the rear with enough slack to not pull tight and run the other end into the trunk area through the hole in the bottom pan just forward of the gas tank. There is a clamp stock that holds the hose against the bottom right near the hole so the hose doesn't slip back out of the hole. I'll try to get a pic if you need.
