Well after 11 years of driving and racing various manual trans cars without incident I made a costly mistake tonight. I screwed up the timing on my shift into 3rd @ a little over 5 grand and blew the trans to bits. I've been racking my brain to remember what exactly happend but the noise it made while self-destructing was so unnerving that I was focused on it. I think what happened was I was a little too quick on the pedal and not fast enough on the shift. I think I had the clutch already disengaged and engaging again before I hit 3rd and it just killed it. I thought I felt it slip ito gear though before it blew. It all happened so fast I'm just not sure. I suppose it could have just blown from the power, but it's freshly rebuilt with beefed up internals and I'm only putting out about 310 to the crank. The place I got it from rated it at 400 pounds of torque and I'm nowhere near that. I'm so pissed cuz I just did the T-5 conversion after having tons of AOD woes and I just barely passed my 500 mile cltuch break in period over the weekend. Now my mustang don't go no more and I'm flat out of money

Sorry to hear about your tranny, your mistake was buying a T5. Is it drivable at all? Normally shifting without clutch just damages synchros badly in these trannies. Getting off the pedal before shift was complete into third should not have destroyed the tranny.

If you run anything more than a 4 banger, you should be looking at a Tremec. You also could have been screwed by whoever did your conversion. My 91 GT was done for the previous owner and the shop that did it set everything up correctly but the gave him a rebuilt (aka garbage) T5. Just a thought.

I did the conversion myself and it was pretty easy. Everything was set up and adjusted properly. I bought the tranny from Texas Motorsports and it's rated at 350hp and 400 torque. It's got hardened gears, G-force cluster retainer, steel bearing retainer, race cut synchros etc. I don't know what went wrong. I think I'm going to do the G-force upgrade since I'll be boosting it eventually. I was thinking I might have just busted the third gear synchro, but things inside the case are sounding pretty crunchy. I definitely broke something off somewhere. I had to drive it for about 10 seconds in first to get it in position to tow it and it was bucking horrible and trying to die and making some bad noises.

Let us know what you find out.

The last T5 I broke was in my 93 GT. Luckily I was slowing down for a turn, and semi expecting it not to make it home. When it went, I was already on the clutch, chit broke bad enough to completely jam the trans and rear end stopped turning. I skidded to a stop. It wouldn't go forwards or reverse. Sucked big poopoo!

Damn.. I have a sick feeling that this is going to happen to me within the next few months. My T-5 isn't appreciating the 600 crank horspower that I'm shoving through it.

that sucks, i've been in your boat about 5 times now? im actually about to pick up my transmission from the shop tomorrow...again. i've pretty much come to the conclusion that T5's are worthless. i'm just too broke to afford anything else. although this fresh rebuild will be nice. i'll just continue breaking T5's until i can afford a g force.

I blew up 3 T-5's last year and everytime it was 3rd gear. The shifter was all the way into third. It was the drop of the clutch was what blew em up for me all the time. I have a great spec stage 2 clutch on a stock motor. the motor doesnt have enough power to slip the clutch. I used to be able to chirp 4th just driving around. But now I realize how bad that is for the trans. If you need the car. you can still drive on that trans for a while. I put about 2000 miles on each trans after i blew thrid out of them.

I think I'm going going to save up for a couple months and get a G-force upgrade or a Tremec, cuz my eventual plans include a 331 or 347 with a 15 psi procharger and I'll need a good tranny so I might as well do it right this time.

Its sucks but that is part of the game, you then have to bite it and spend the money on a transmission that can take the abuse.
I have broke:
1 stock AOD
1 fully built AOD
1 T5
1 T45
Thats why my 88 had a tko in it when I sold it and my 96 has a viper T56 in it.
