So about an hour before i did this i did a couple smokeshows for a friend that was back in town, well actually he did one with me riding shotgun, anyway as i was leaving my g/f's house earlier tonight i said hey wanna see a smokeshow?? knowing i have new wheels/tires waiting at home and these are completely bald i wanted to show off a little...BIG MISTAKE!! it got wheel hop as usual so i backed off it and BAM, i hit the clutch and it only worked in reverse sometimes, so i backed it into her driveway and it will only spin 1 rear tire in reverse at a time, but both will spin intermittently, and sometiems nothing happens i just hear a whining from the rear end...the driveshaft is spining and both axles are good(because i could get each tire to spin in gravel at different times, but not all the time), its an 82 mustang with the 7.5" rear axle, i have a parts car with a 8.8" i wanna swap in eventually, just not this soon...tomorrow im gonna tow it about 8 miles home and swap axles this weekend, is it the trac loc that broke??? i got a T5 also to replace my weak SROD 4spd, does the T5 take ATF or 90wt?? it had like 2 ounces of red oil that looked like ATF in it...i hope it wasnt driven on that low of fluid(no shavings inside it), but anyway i just wanted to check, thanks guys

I blew up my 7.5 last year first time on slicks. I could still drive it home from the track, but it was a long trip. Got home and the spider gears in the traclok were rounded off and one was split into 4 equal pieces. Probably time to put that 8.8 in there like I did.

You can change the rear axle where the car is at in about 3 hours or less. The 8.8 should just bolt in exactly like the 7.5 came out. I have had 2 different 7.5's and one 8.8 in my 82. no problem. Leave the brakes intact and tied to the car, and drop the entire housing out. Then just put the new one back up there.

If you had a spare 7.5 you could just swap the diff parts, or weld it up to drive it home if needed. Sounds like you ate some pieces off the pinion or ring, or demo'ed the spider gears.

My 82 runs 12's on a 7.5, on Drag Radials, but I guess the automatic softens the shock on the rear.

Thanks for the heads up on the spoiler. I just got an 82 GT front air dam, and realized it was going to restrict access to the front.

thanks rd, i tore into it and it shattered the spider gears and the little plates on the sides of em were mangled, so now starts the rear end and tranny swap, yay...
