I recently purchased a 1986 GT and working thru a few things when I have time. Can someone let me know where the black/orange fusible link coming off the starter solenoid should go and what it is for? Thanks!

I see you have some heavy gauge feed wires in there too.

The most likely scenario is that somebody did an alternator upgrade and ran a new feed wire.

Under these circumstances, your black/orange wire [should] be disconnected.

Tuck it up out of the way and secure it.

Im actually going to be replacing the alternator since it is not charging. I believe the original alternator is still in the car. Could this be the reason it's not charging? Here are a few more photos.

Well I’m pretty sure that wire is supposed to go to the alternator but it’s been years since I’ve had stock alternators in my Foxes. Maybe this thread will help and specifically Post #2.

Electrical Thread '2g Alternator Wiring'

Aug 27, 2017
Give me a clue! I found a diagram on another forum. From what I can gather 3 wires go together at battery pos., 2 heavy gauge wires, and a yellow voltage sensing wire? Does that sound right? Then there is one white wire connecting the 2 plugs? And finally a wire for the light in the dash? I am going from a 1g on a 1985 ford ltd station wagon. Wiring is driving me nuts! I had to move power distribution and ignition from the passenger side to the driver's side.

The other thing worth mentioning is that the alternator wiring passes through the headlight harness to get it from one side of the car to the other.

You can also buy the manual digitally through https://www.forelpublishing.com/ that's where the above image came from. They are licensed by ford and exactly the same as the shop manuals used in the dealers back in the day. It's 20 bucks.
