blowing black smoke under wot. any ideas?

Ive been told from people driving behind me that i blow black smoke when i punch it on the highway. what would cause this? busted cat?

I'm not sure, it might, im also backfiring every once in a while, how do i change my air fuel ratio so im not running rich anymore? i just changed my plugs.

correct... black smoke denotes unburned hydrocarbons... You are running rich.

Probably 02sensors.

check all the stupid tune up stuff that needs to be checked anyways

do a plug run, see what they tell you.

For our engines running rich (assuming it is that and not a dead plug or something), I would first look at Fuel pressure, mass air sensor, and o2 sensors. Check them all


check everything, don't start throwing parts at it untill you actualy know whats wrong

is it a lot of black smoke? A little is fairly normal in these cars...at least all of them that I've seen with stock engines.

its not alot of black smoke, but enough for someone to comment, part of it might have been my dumps blowing up dust of the road though
