Upon removal the HG wasn't as "blown" as I thought it would be (one cylinder and not even through metal ring). The entire passenger side gasket shows black deterioration at the top of all four cylinders. The driver’s side looks way better. Any ideas why they look so different and why the deterioration is at the tops of the cylinders? I'm going to check the flatness of the head and block on the passenger side.

I think it failed between the top right water hole and the piston. Just enough to get coolant in the cylinder I guess.

What cylinder head are you using? Are you using head studs or bolts?

I'm using GT40Ps with ARP 7/16" bolts.

Id recommend studs over bolts on that combo, and go 10ftlbs more on the upper (long studs) after your done tq them to spec. Looks like the head lifted personally, those are 9333 gaskets arnt they?

That is from my wall of carnage collection. About 8 years ago I ran a little to much boost combined with extra timing = melted forged turbo piston.

I already did up the torque. I did 80 on the bottom bolts and 90 on the uppers. I've used these torques a few times in the past with good luck.

yup, 9333 gaskets.

90 ft lbs on a bolt is far less clamping force than 90 ft lbs on a stud. It looks to me as though your head lifted. I had the same problem on my old motor, happened twice then I swapped in head studs and it didnt happen again.

Rick, do you always typically torque 10 lbs. more on the top studs?

Scott depends on the combo, stud size and cylinder pressure.... but 10 is a good nominal increase for the longer studs. The higher you go the more strength your using of the bolt, the ARP values given are using 80% of the strength OFF the top of my head.
