So I blew the rear axle. I dont know exactly what is broken though. I took it to a shop, they replaced the pinion bearing and axle gaskets, filled it with royal purple and it still has a whinning noise. I am picking it up today, I havnt driven it since I dropped it off but they told me the noise is still there. My friend doesnt know what to do.

I have seen some mosler axle/eaton diff packages for a bit under $600 but I dont know what to get.
I think I am going to get some steeper gears-4:10's or 4:30's why not while it is all apart?

When it was apart I looked at the wear by the hub(s)?-the outer ends of the axles where the wheel studs are. They looked like they where smoothed over too much so they may be the source of the whinning.

It sucks because I am paying a shop to take a part and put back together something that didnt get fixed, only to have to do it all over again at a shop that hopefully do the job right.

So component package suggestions are welcome! I plan on running the hell out of my car on the street, taking it to drag race, and occasionally on a road course. Sorry for the long write up.

That sucks...

There is a place in CT that used to advertise in the bargainnews.com (they probably still do) where they will do gears, all bearings and seals for under $700... I wish I had gone that route...

I'd recommend getting the ford 31 spline traction lock and superiors axles. This should be the most cost effect route you can take and it will be a nice upgrade for you. I'd get the axles tubes welded if the shop that are using has a jig for it.

Yeah time for a complete rebuild. I blew my rear up too and ended up with a 03 Cobra 31 spline diff, Moser axles and a new set of FRPP 4.10s. I would have gone with Superior axles but I got such a good deal on a new set of Mosers that I couldn't turn it down. BTW johnbleakleyford.com has the best price on the 03 Cobra diff. Good Luck

I have Moser 31 spline axels and a Torsen T2R diff. The Torsen has no clutch packs to wear out like the others or Cone's like a Auburn. The T2R is a 4:1 bias ratio. So if you had 500ft lbs of torque being put out to the wheels (Which can happen easy with the torque being multiplied by the gears) before the inside tire would spin it would put out 4 x 500= 2000ft lbs to the outside wheel before the inside would spin.

A standard posi like FRPP is a 2:1 bias ratio so it would only be 1000 ft lbs. The standard Torsen (T2) is 2:1 and less money than the T2R, also a Detroit true trac is 2:1 and like a Torsen has NO clutch packs or cones to wear out. The Detroit is reasonalby priced, probably not too much more than a FRPP diff.

I would go with one of these instead of one that will wear out the clutch's.
Also a girdle is well worth it instead of the stock cover, but you can always put one on later.

Is anyone running the 31spline Cobra diff and nailing around 1.4-5 60s? I'm curious to know how strong the Cobra unit is under this sorta abuse.

I too am looking at a Cobra diff, superior 31 splines, welded tubes and support (if it can handle that sorta abuse).
