bought gears and have no clue how 2 install????

I just bought 4.10 gears for my 02 Mustang Gt and i have no clue how to install them plus someone told me the traction control would be a problem for me and i called a shop and they said it would be @ $300 to install so i was wondering if someone could walk me through the install or give me a site to go to...

Nope... gear installation is not something that can be talked through. If you've no idea how they are installed then you also do not have the tools necessary for the job, nor the know-how to use them.

$300 is CHEAP for a gear install, by the way. I'd take them up on that if I were you.

It's a lot of work and it has to be done correctly. Like Kilgore eludes to above; The link kinda makes it out to be a bit of a bolt on exercise. It's not.

Trust me... dont do it yourself. And IF you do you HAVE to get FRPP gears. Its a PAIN to install any other kind of aftermarket ones (correctly anyway).

Trust me, spend the money.....get a shop to do it

The rub here however, is this: If you know someone that knows how to install gears and can show you the process as you go then I say go for it!

It's not an especially difficult job but you DO need to be shown the right way to do it. The only way I know of to do that reliably is "hands on".

Why would it be a problem? The T/C works off the ABS wheel sensors in the rear. You don't even touch them for the install.

You will need to recal the speedo though

The hard part would be setting the preload on the crush sleeve behind the pinion nut. This nut has to be torqued just right so as to crush a metal sleeve that causes drag on the pinion. The "drag" is referred to as "preload" and is very challenging to set the first time you try doing it. You will need a couple extra crush sleeves just in case. You will need a six foot pry bar to turn the pinion nut hard enough to crush the sleeve. Once you think you have it right, you can measure the "preload" with an inch pound torque wrench. This is a specialty tool that you can borrow from most auto parts stores.

Speaking of specialty tools you will need special bearing pullers and drivers, a press, and a magnetic base dial indicator. You will use the magnetic base dial indictor to measure backlash. I will let someone else explain backlash I am getting tired of typing.

Also, you need to decide what level of install kit to use. There are three levels, each contains more stuff. When you take it apart you will know what you need.

Also, you should install carbon fiber frictions in your trac lock.

As I said, for $300 with a real shop standing behind the repair, that is the best course of action my friend!

why do people keep on insisting that its harder to install a certain type of gear than a ford.... its the SAME THING....

Not necessarily. Ford gears are set up in a specific way, so you can use the Ford Pinion Depth install method. Other manufacturers don't set theirs up the same way.

I think thats where your doing the crush sleeve and it took me my uncle and a lot of ass to turn that thing lol, honestly for 300 bucks, installing gears is not worth your troubles.

Oh yeah, about the abs in the rear, I couldnt get my axles out so i had to hammer the sensors out on both sides to get it out, 80 bucks a piece

I myself am doing my own gear/axle/diff/bearings/seals install... But I have a lil wrench turning experience too

$300 is a good deal, i would go for it.

i agree if you have some mechanical knowledge and understand what is going on with a gear install then go for it. Otherwise pay the 300 bucks for the install or you will pay alot more in the end if something goes wrong...........

You would be a fool to pass up $300! Get it done right and spend the extra cash. You will more than likely get your car back on the road a lot sooner too!
