My family has owned two shotguns and a rifle for years, and I've learned to fire bolt-action rifles, shotguns, and bb guns (where I started) over the years.

But I've never owned one that was "mine"; and I'd only fired a handgun once, at a range.

Today I went to the local gun show, and my best friend's mom owns a gun store and was selling at the show. She had one of these http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/...57765_757752_757751_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y on special, and I bought it today. I'm waiting on my friend and I to have the same day off again so we can head out to the range together and I can learn to handle this thing correctly. I picked it because the price was right, it uses the same ammo as the rifle I'm wanting to get next, it had the features I wanted in a handgun, and it's small enough that I can keep it in my truck, nightstand, or wherever as needed.

One of my other co-workers teaches the state's concealed carry course and owns his own private range, so I'm going to get with him and take his class so I can get my license for carrying it, and get some practice time in with it.

Practice like your life depends on it. Make muscle memory your objective when you learn to handle it a bunch. Always treat that thing like it's about to fire. I'm sure you've heard all that before.

Handguns are great tools. Most issues you see are when people get lazy with their safe handling procedures or just forget to respect how volatile a handgun is compared to a long gun.

Be safe, and shoot a lot!
