Okay, I'm stumped. How the heck do you get the push rod out of the master cylinder?! I'm changing the MC and the new one doesn't have one (autozone special, but hey it works yes?)

I am unclear as to how a new master cylinder doesnt have the rod/piston in it? Are you by chance referring to the power brake booster rod? I bought an oreilly master cylinder and it came complete, but they dont come with a brake booster rod.

The push rod is held in with a clip. It can be pulled out with a bit of effort. New clips are available, if not your local parts house, then NPD has them in their catalog.

I have said clip. Yet I can't get the blasted rod to pull out of the old MC. I'm referring to the rod that connect the pedal to the piston int he MC. I have no power brakes so it is not a booster rod.

Put the rod in a vice and give the MC a good whack with a rubber mallet.

My pushrod actually just pulled out of the old MC when I replaced it last week.

Is that normal? When I put on my new Maverick MC this past weekend I just slid it back in and it seems to work fine.

Thats good, I was starting to get freaked out there for a minute that I had half assed the job or done it incorrectly. I actually went to Lowes last night and bought some angle iron so that I can weld together a bracket that will hold the Wilwood proportioning valve and bolt to where the old distribution was. I am pretty excited to get it going.

I'm waiting on delivery of my wilwood front disc conversion. I've got my rear disc conversion sitting here.

Okay, the push rod in the vise idea, though I thought it would work, only resulted in a flange flying off the MC.

Sorry about your MC. got that tip years ago from a veteran mechanic and it's always worked for me.

I thought it would too. I ended up driving up to mustang's unlimited and gettingan adjustable pushrod.

I've got an adjustable pushrod on my bench waiting for next weekend's swap to a dual chamber MS. I'm excited to be finally ditching the suicide single chamber!

Eh, to say it's suicidal is a bit of an overstatement. Highly unsafe without a doubt, but really, the likelyhood of your fluid all draining out isn't THAT high.

But for the money...the swap is well worth it!

Is it possible that some previous owner thought the rod should not be so easy to get out and put a gob of JB weld or something on the end at one time? Lots of crazy things can happen, and I see no logical reason why the rod will not come out. Are you just dumping the old MC anyway? If so, I'd tear into that sucker something fierce just for the sake of curiosity.

Eh, no jb weld haha the thing is loose in the hole but just won't budge..i've pretty well smashed it up but to no avail...it is stuck in the piston. I was dumping it anyhow though. I just replaced it with an adjustable pushrod which will be good if I decide to go to power brakes.

i set my MC in a vice then grabbed the pushrod with a slide pull hammer. With a little effort it popped out.
