Brakes. Good Choices for an '01 GT?

Hey all! I know you guys were the place to come for some serious advice. Looking to go ahead with replacing the brakes on my 2001 GT. I still have all stock compents, with regards to the brake set up. Actually, still the stock brake pads (40k miles, is that good?). My car is my daily driver, and it rarely sees any auto cross or road race event. But, going by the rule of "If it needs replacing, upgrade!" , was looking to take a step up in performance. What are some of my options? Price is some what of an issue.

Are there systems that work by just replacing the pads and rotors? It would make sense to me that they would be less expensive. Maybe not. Also, I would like the look of a slotted or drilled rotor if possible. So, what avenues do I have? Thanks in advance, because I know I'm gonna get the info I need from you guys!

I'd just buy Ford pads, and be done with it unless you tend to need to slow down real fast

I've only faded my stock set up once while exiting a freeway going well.... way to fast.

Hawk HPS pads are great for what you have stated...slotted rotors would be a plus. THEY DO WORK, they're not just for looks either...I love my set-up.

dont mean to hijack the thread but what pads create the lowest dust? I replaced mine last summer and now i find myself cleaning my rims every day. that gets really old! I cant remember the brand i went with but they were only like 25 bucks for the front set.

And exactly what do slotted rotors do that a solid rotor won't?

If you are thinking it is for gas dissapation from the pads, that problem went away a long time ago, just like 4 barrel carbs.

Please don't take any offense or take this is a flame, but they work just as well as a solid or drilled rotor. They are good for one thing only over solid rotors and that is for the cool factor.

Back to the original poster, if you are looking to upgrade and don't want to spend a ton of $$$, the Cobra system can be purchased from any Ford dealer .

Baer also packages the same system at a little higher price.

With the 13" fron rotors and twin piston PBR caliper you definately feel the difference.

No flame taken but you may think that brake fade has been gone since the carb...brake pads (many) still glaze and outgas, drilled /slotted do provide relief from both...Besides, for the price of a premium solid disc, for a couple bucks more you can buy a drilled/slotted for the same price. I gotta say, it's much easier to decrease speed with drilled /slotted rotors and HPS pads at the Marriotsville Driving track (private) here in Md...No, they might not be practical for everyday street driving, for the track they are fine. Whens the last time you went to a driving track in a 3300 pound car?

I upgraded my brakes because stock ones suk a$$. I got 13" Brembo kit that the 2000 cobra R came with. Cost me $1300 shipped and installed. Big improvement but maybe I should have dished out a little more cash and got the 14" kit with 2 piece rotors. They cost like double or triple what I spent. If you dont care about brand so much, I guess you can go with regular cobra brakes and get slotted rotors. But their calipers are only two pistons. I think a brake kit is worth investing in.

Is there a cheaper alternative to the 13" Cobra rotors and Calipers? I think GEFracing.com used to sell them for $300.00
