I have been forced to post pone the 408 engine that I was already to splurge on. So disheartening...Well I am trying to figure out the best plan of attack...
Here is the deal:
My brakes are busted, i think its only a broken line but still they are pretty shot, on my 69 coupe ...
-They are, more like were, 4 wheel drums ..so im gonna scrap the system...
-I want 4 wheel discs
-Line loc
-I want to install a 9 inch rear...that will handle the 408 that WILL COME LATER
-Should I tub or minitub
-I want to install a high lift rear suspension
-I want to install subframe connectors and other parts(i dunno what else) to provide chassis stiffenint
-I want to install front 620 drop springs and maybee do the shelby drop
What is the best plan of attack for this tall order...
I guess we should start with the 9 inch rear...
I know it is a lot...but I am not getting that engine for now...so i need to bite in to something else

Plan one project at a time and then put up those specific questions and use the search function a lot. Let us know what will be first then the help will come.

I would say if your going to mini tub or tub it that should be you first choice. IMHO though you don't need to as you can get a pretty big tire on a 69 and with the right suspension run pretty low numbers.

Historic...I was hoping that you might offer your advice as to which of those i should start with...I was thinking the 9 inch rear...That is where I will start...I am going from a rear disc setup, with posi of som sort and 31 spline axles...I figure there we probably be some drive shaft work that needs to be done...

What 9 inch rear should I look for? Small bearing right? Out of a 69 or 70 mustang?and what else(maybe a 69 or 70 cougar)...What size rearend do i need...I dont have the tools for this build...but i will buy them so what tools should I buy...
--Brown
p.s. I know I am asking alot, but since I cancelled that engine build Its really Important to me to get started on the rear and fix the brakes soon...

i am with historic, you have to prioritize your build. if this is a daily driver, then start with the brakes and at least convert the fronts to disc. if this is not a daily driver, then start with the chassis and make it a stiff as possible, subframe connectors, stringers from the subframe connectors to the rocker panels, and perhaps a center cage like tcp made to connect the subframe connectors together in the center of the car. either way these two come first. then suspension. remember that when the chassis is properly stiffened, any chassis mods you make become much more effective, especially spring rate changes.

I do have another car that I share with my brother...However, I would like to do the rear end first...Because if I focus on that I can bang out the rear suspension and switch over to rear discs at the same time...So I can at least be driving it again...then I'd follow up with the chassis stiffening

So the question remains..Obiviously I will look for a 69 or 70 mustang 9 inch rear end...But if I can not find that what rear shall I look For? Does anyone know the measurements for the 9 inch rear end for my 69 and are there anyother parts that I need to swap...The rear springs should be interchangeable etween the 8 and 9 inch right...

The rear you want is 54 1/4" flange to flange. Here is a link to different vehicles you can get it from and all of the differences in 9" rears.

IMHO start with the brakes. If you can not stop everything else is not important.

Then move to the suspension and then to the rear end. Unless you get lucky it is hard to beat the set ups that come out of Currie Enterprises.

With a current 9" check the splines and OK to stay with 28 spline unless you do the drag racing scene on a regular basis. I have run a 28 spline axle for years with no problems at road race circuits. If you need to get your hands on a 9" then take whichever - small or big bearing - I use a small bearing (only because that is what was made available).

Not debating that one bit, one of my biggest mistakes was doing the whole car at one time.

BUUUT....

It is wise to plan out everything in advance. Figure out what you want for each component BEFORE you begin, and once you have that decided try not to deviate from the plan. It will cost you more if you do, it did me, and now I have a garage full of parts I cannot use.

Among those parts is all the components for a large bearing 9 with 28 spline axles. The tubes will need to be shortened, but I was planning on tubbing it at one point.

Would it be okay to use a 56 Inch rear, or does it look really bad..I don't mind 'em sticking out a lil... And I am going with high rake rear suspension...If not I can always get it shortened right? I will try to price this out tonite and post some options...

Currie will shorten the rear end, new ends and bearing for about $450.

Im gonna go with Historic here, if you have the funds available, I would go with a rear from currie. They will build it just the way you want with the parts you want. Saves you the hassle. Just my 2 cents

408 ci, line lock, 32-spline axles, big tires -- sounds like you are headed for the strip. If you are, with that combo you're going to be in the 11's and iirc that means you'll be needing a 6-pt roll cage to run at any NHRA track. So you better pencil that in, as well as all the other specs necessary for a 10 or 11-second car.

Also, it you're going to be jacking up the rear end you're not going to be doing any corner carving. So you can skip the 620# springs -- soft fronts with 90/10 shocks and the sway bar unhooked are the way to go at the strip. You can scratch the Shelby drop and rear discs too. You will need some traction aids, though -- Caltracs or Slide-A-Links ought to do you through the low 10's.

If you can read between the lines, what I'm really saying is what several have already said, that you need to decide where you want to end up before you can plan how to get there. Your current shopping list has several contradictory items, and that says to me you haven't really decided on the finished product yet.

180-out speaks well here. Your proposed mods are split b/w strip and roadcourse/autox duty....they are not completely exclusive, but if you only plan to do one, why waste $$$ on the other?

Ever consider an 8.8 rearend? 94 and up have 5 lugs and disc brakes and all 5.0 rears have trac-locs. You could easily have one under you car for less than $500, less if you can cut off brackets and weld on new ones. They are plenty strong and more efficient. The drawback is you can't change your gears easily, but most people don't have more than one pumpkin to switch anyway.

Nice web site, but it does not show anything as far as dimensions for the springs perches for the various year mustang. Do you have a link for that as well?

180 and LMAN I understand what you are saying...However I know exactly what I want... A street Bruiser... I like the look of the raised rear end so thats what I want, the car will never see power steering or power brakes or AC, cause I just don't feel a muscle car should have them...It will eventually get a cage cause it'll need it...I am not really that interested in drag racing or autocrossing this car.. I'm just trying to make into to my dream car

On another note, I Called currie they will not be back in till the new year, I am going to see what they will charge for a 9 inch 54 1/4 rear with 31 spline axles and a limited slip and ill see what they chrage for the disc brakes.Anything Else?
