Broken Front Bucket Seat Back

so I see a lot of people talking about the infamous broken front seat back. I too have one on the drivers side, mine seems to be only the right side of the front seat back. So what's the problem in there? I'd like to fix this since driving while leaning back on half the seat is very uncomfortable. So what's in there that could cause this, someone surly has repaired one of these things, so what does it look like in there, I can see a lot of foam padding when I unzipped the back cover but that's as far as I went. Sure would like to see a photo of the frame in question? I'm sure it may have many issues but looking at it would sure give me a heads up as to what I'm getting into. Let's see some pics of the seat frame.

The seat back isn't hard to fix with a halfway decent welder. The seat back is probably cracked...in multiple places. There's a lot of info on the interweb. Do you have gt seats or regular Lx seats ?

It's a GT car so I'm assuming they must be GT seats. really didn't know they were different.

I asked here because this is the site for hands on experience, you guys have been there and done it. There is a wealth of info available right here from the guys out there getting dirty and loving it.

Yeah, the Lx seats have no side bolsters on the seat bottom or the back. Also, no knee bolster. The seat back foam and upholstery have to be removed to fix the seat. I say its not hard but I do that stuff all the time on a lot of different makes and models. Wish I had pics when I fixed my old seats....I don't think they're in my thread. Those were Lx seats so not exactly like yours even if pics are there.

Thanks, yea I have the correct GT seats then , do they all have the zipper on the bottom of the seat back. I did manage to unzip it to take a peep but didn't try to lift the cover up too far, pretty tight fit. I think the covers may have been replace ? they look pretty nice for being 28 yrs old. ??

I have a supply of 'sport' seats that I've squirreled away just for that reason, that and the tracks rust and bend, welding is an option, pm me if you need to replace one.
You should remove the seat back from the base to weld it, less likely to set crap on fire, although I am not a welder.

My seats from my '86 are in incredible condition, so those could be original.

I've taken the cover off of the driver's seat so i could wash the cover and to replace the foam. It's really not too difficult to do if that's the only project you're working on. You will need a set of hog ring pliers and hog rings to reattach the cover to cushion. My frames are fine, so you will just need to do a little exploratory research.

I don't remember, do you have a welder? It can't be too difficult to fix one way or the other. You've already done far more complicated stuff on your mustang.

Are you sure it's the seat and not the floor where the seat attaches to? Those areas are notorious for tearing when a mustang has been thrashed on a bit.

Thanks gives me some insight, but I'm sure there is some one on here who has done a repair on this frame that can shed some light on the problem.

yea its definitely broken inside some where, can't feel anything but something is broken, I just thought there would be some one who has repaired one of these since it seems common. ???
Maybe I'll have to tear it apart and document it myself for some one else, either way it's going to get fixed.

I've never fixed one by welding it for obvious reasons, I just have a bunch of parts I can use, no pics though, it's easy, or should I say not difficult.

87-93 Mustang front seat repairs

The metal frame inside the seat back has probably cracked. It can be welded in most cases, but any repair that you do means removing the upholstery. The major trick here is the headrests off, and the how to do that changes with model years. The 89-93 have a single steel post.

See headrest removal | Mustang Forums at StangNet for the how to get the headrest off for these year cars.

The upholstery has a zipper that you unzip and then you can slide the upholstery off to repair the seat back frame.

The floor pan mounts for the front of the seats have also been known to crack and cause similar problems.
