My buddy has a 95/96 4.6 t-bird, that is popping through the intake. It pop's through the intake when he is leaning into the throttle. We hooked a fuel pressure gauge and it is showing 30psi @ idle, and when he blip's the throttle the pressure hardly moves. If he keeps onto the throttle after the motor is done stumbling over it self the pressure will work it's way up to 40psi, and then he let's go it will fall to 26psi, and go up to 30psi when it begin's to idle normally...I told him it's retarded, and so is it's spark. If my plug wire location is correct for #1. The timing light is showing the notch 8-10 deg before the 10 deg BTDC mark on the timing cover...How the **** do you advance the timing? ... I also think that maybe the Air intake temp sensor -or- Exhaust temp sensor has something to do with it.....ANY HELP WILL BE WELCOME>>>>THANX MIKE

Try disconnecting & plugging the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator. The fuel pressure should then be steady at about 40psi. Also, you may want to check the compression; he may have a bad intake valve/spring. I know this may sound condescending, but double check the plug wires and make sure they are on the proper terminals of the coil packs (I have screwed this up myself). Post more information when you have it...

I'm a pushrod guy, what's the mod motor firing order?, and same location on the coils...All help is greatly appreciated...Someone also said something about maybe a bad fuel pump? Will my old fox body fuel pump work for troubleshooting purposes?

What you described with the fuel pressure is normal, because the fuel pressure regulator compensates for manifold vacuum to keep the pressure across the regulator constant.

The PCM only has 4 drivers to fire the spark plugs, so 2 plugs fire at a time and every plug fires 2x during each cycle of the motor. Standing in front of the motor the correct terminals are as follows:

6 ... 3 ......... 7 ... 2
1 ... 5 ......... 4 ... 8

Firing order is: 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8

Hope this helps...

it won't work, you have a return style fuel system & he doesn't, the pumps are completely different

I think you are wrong on return/returnless fuel system, the Mustang did not get a returnless fuel system until '99, I doubt any other 4.6 cars had it much sooner.

Wrong again. In 98 Ford changed the fuel pump and fuel rail, but the system is still a return style. The PCM didn't start regulating the fuel pressure until 99...

my last 98 had a returnless style on it. i wouldn't have known it, but mine was having some fuel issues & we found out that way i had no idea about it until my mechanic told me about it & btw-he was a ford mechanic for years & owns quite a few stangs him also, so i know he knows what he was talking about. i very well could be wrong about that & what you say makes sense, but ford did make a bunch of changes mid year getting ready for 99, but mine did have it

Mine doesn't, but it was manufactured in Feb 98. Even so, according to the factory powertrain control diagnostic manual, the only Ford vehicles with returnless fuel systems in 98 were: Ranger (mechanical returnless), Continental, Escort/Tracer (electronic returnless), and the Mark VIII (electronic limited returnless). All others have return systems.

Perhaps yours was a really late 98...

As often as Ford comes up with "better ideas" - who knows...
