Building up 289?

heads, you will need a set of good aftermarket heads like the windsor sr, afr 185's, tfs twisted wedge, or edelbrock performer rpm heads.

either a weiand stealth or performer rpm intake with a 600 to 750cfm carb.

you will need a fairly serious cam as well, something like the performer rpm at a minimum, but more like an xe282h extreme energy can from comp cams.

heads, a set of hooker super comp headers with a 1 5/8 or 1 3/4" primary tube.

the rest of the short block needs to be balanced, use a good forged piston cause you are going to turn some rpm(around 6500 with the 289), and replace the stock rod bolts with a set of arp wave lock bolts. also have the rods polished and shot peened for maximum strength.

you are going to want to use the hipo 289 balancer at the least, and better would be a good aftermarket sfi rated balancer.
