Hmm... that's a good question. I watched the movie right when my mom got her '01 Bullitt, but that was 3 years ago and I don't remember. If I see her today I'll ask her, I know she'll know.

Since you are talking about the bullitt... here's a pic of my best time in my mom's BONE STOCK car. The only thing not factory ford equipped was the addition of a drop in K&N filter and my 4 year old 26X10.5X16 ET streets with almost 25lbs of air in them!!! I couldn't believe the car ran this good! Heck, my mom clicked off a 13.8 pass the same day.

The movie was made in 1968 with Steve McQueen aka "Bullitt"

Jake, I think he wanted to know if the car was called BULLITT, or if Steve's character was named Bullitt... not the title of the movie.

The movie is named after the Detective played by Steve McQueen. The car is not a bullit mustang. The mustang is actually not that great looking in the movie. It's dented and dirty. Bad wheelhop on the reverse burnout during the big chase scene too. But it's still a bad @$$ car and an awesome chase, even if they reuse the same shot from 2 or 3 different angles to make it longer lol. Look at the scene where the cars pass a VW beetle (at least i'm pretty sure it's a vw beetle) going down the hills. You see the same beetle being passed again a minute later...my dad noticed it right away and pointed it out to me. He's observant like that though.

well that helps a little I am really just wondering if the 1968 bullit mustang came out being named after the movie...not talking about the car in the actual movie but the real bullits in 1968 were they named after the movie? I'm guessing though that since you said that the car Mcqueen was driving was not a bullit that the 1968 bullit was named after the movie.

Steve McQueen played Frank Bullitt. The Bullitt Mustang came out after the movie.

At a car show in my town Saturday there was a heavily modified Bullitt with a 427 and 445hp. Awesome. The guy had a VCR behind the car and kept playing the chase scene from the movie. Truly good stuff.

View attachment 525801...I cannot understand a word your saying.

There were no 1968 Bullitt Mustangs if that's what you're asking. The 2001 Bullitt Mustang came out as a special edition to commemorate the movie.

the car is 390GT with torq thrust d's if you get the dvd version in the bonus material they go into it a little more indepth. I don't know if Ford ever actually made a 68 mustang using the name. I think they used it in honor 3yrs ago. I think guys just copied the look as far as other 68's are concerned.

coincidently, the recent issue of MM&FF talks about the Bullitt. There was a letter sent in by an INMATE in a jail and him and his inmate buddy had a debate. The only time there was an official Bullitt Mustang was in 2001. The one in the movie is just an awesome Mustang

License Plate

I am a fan of the movie and purchased the Special Edition DVD that contains a section of bonus footage.

I was curious as to what his license plate number was, so I froze the frame.

I was able to make out JJZ109...which now resides on my black 94 Cobra.
