About two years ago my brother told me that some people he had talked to said that the Bullitt Mustang was located very close to us in Kentucky. About 30 miles south of Louisville. They told him that the back end was banged up. At that time most people thought that it didn't exist. Myself included. I told him that if it did exist nobody knew where it was. I think it was earlier this year I read in either Mustang Monthly or Mustangs and Fords that it did exist and there was a journalist who knew where it was. After I had a nice big helping of humble pie I told my brother what I had read. The journalist said that it was in a barn in Kentucky and had some damage to it. It was then moved to Tennessee. The owner had documented proof that it was the Bullitt Mustang. He even had a letter from Steve McQueen trying to buy it back from the previous owner. The current owner said that he had no plans of restoring it. He said it would stay just as it was. I got the journalists e-mail and sent him a message as to where I was located and the story that my brother told me. I never did hear from him which leads me to believe that it may have actually been near me. Man I wish I could have saw that car. Does anybody else on this site have any more info on that car?

I heard that the car does exist, but that the owner is not interested in selling it at all, or showing it to the public for some reason. I also heard that it was in need of some TLC, but that it would remain AS IS. Sad that it worked out that way.
BTW I too heard that Steve tried to buy it from the owner, to no avail.

It has been years since i read about the Bullitt Mustangs, but I think the one with the 302 was used for the "jump" and city scenes, and the 390 was used for the chase out of the city. I remember reading that even with the 390, the car was no match for the 440 Charger.:( Mustang Monthly did an article on the cars back in the eighties.

Which Bullitt Mustang are you talking about, the small block or the one with the 390?

I believe two cars were used to film the movie. Both were 390's?

Very good site. Thanks for posting it. It was Brad Bowling (I remembered after reading his name on the first site) that I sent an e-mail to. All I wanted to know is if the location was near me and not the exact location. Oh well. After reading some on the ponysite I have my hopes up. Maybe someday I will see the real car. I don't blame the owner for not giving up his identity but I think he should at least have pictures published for us.

I still remember the first time I saw Bullitt on big screen. No, not a theatre but at a drive-in. I was with my older brother and his wife. When the green Mustang jumped the hills I could feel my stomach move as if I were in the car with Frank Bullitt. I don't remember but we may have been in my brother's Mustang when we saw that movie. Probably were. I was with him when he bought his 65 Fastback probably early summer 66. I've been a fan of the Mustang ever since. He hasn't had a Mustang for quite a few years but I'm still working on him.

BTW, I live in Bullitt County and work in Shelbyville, Ky. located in Shelby county and Fordsville isn't that far away from me. It would have been fitting for the Bullitt car to be located in my area.

I think both the Mustangs were 390 cars, and the one that survived actually got used for someone's daily driver after it was sold by the studio. One of the musclecar mags I used to subscribe to (God only knows which one) had an article that attempted to track down the car, without success. BTW, there is a Bullitt "reunion" of sorts taking place in July '06 in San Francisco. Mustang Monthly had a small mention of it, and not only will it have a car show, but surviving members of the flick will be present and they will show Bullitt on the big screen at the Bridge Theater. Too bad they couldn't show it at a drive-in! Anyway, it sounds like it could be huge and I for one plan to be there with my never-ending '68 project finally finished.

My friend's dad worked as an autobody man in the 60's in the San Francisco/Daly City area. He said he worked on the Bullitt cars during the filming of the movie. I will see what insight/history he has about the Bullitt cars and post anything interesting.
