Burning a good bit of oil...

Well at the title states I've been burning a good bit of oil lately. It's burned oil ever since I bought the car, but it seems to be quite a bit worse lately. I think it's the valve stem seals because it really poofs smoke when it's been idling for a little bit and I hit the gas. And on startup it will poof smoke.

How do I definetly tell it's those and not something else like piston rings? Is there any diagnostic test??

Once I get my tax return money back, I plan on installing VT stage II cams and valvesprings and such, so I'm gonna replace the valvestem seals while I'm in there. Is there any special tools that I will need or what tool do yall recommend using to do them with? What tool do you compress the valve springs with? Is it at all possible to do this with the heads on the car or do I need to take them off?

Sorry for all the questions, I just wanna make sure I have this thing nailed before I get balls deep and realize I gotta buy something else. Thanks for the help fellas.

Based on the info you provided, it deffinately sounds like valve seals.

Could be the rings as well. How many miles are on the engine? What weight oil are you using? You can do a compression test to see if the rings are bad. If the compression is low, add a cap of oil into the cyclinder. Let it sit for a few minutes. If you test the same cylinder again and the compression goes up, your rings are bad. If the smoke comes out the back on deceleration (dropping RPM) then your valves could be shot.

If the rings are bad, a compression test may not tell the story. There are several sets of rings, and there are specific rings for just the oil.

IMO Just the simple fact that his primary complaint of visible smoke from the exhaust is after idling and at start up, the valve stem seals should be the primary suspect.

I run 10-30 in it. when I bought it from the guy it was supposed to have 30k mile on it.

Do you guys have any tips on replacing the valve seals?
