buying a supercharger soon...which kind should i buy?

i have seen so many, which kind should i get, roots or centrifugal? what brand? i have no clue what to get but i know i want one, im looking to spend like maybe 3 grand total. suggestions would help, thanks
 
You have three choices (basically)

1. Centrifugal (Vortech, Paxton)
2. Roots (Ford Racing)
3. Twin Screw (Kenne Bell)


The first acts like a turbo in that a propeller is spun to massive rpms and boost potential is almost unlimited. You will get the largest gains from this setup, however you will sacrifice low end as lag is a problem (it acts like a turbo, remember).

The second will generate maximum boost almost immediately, but will be limited in ultimate boost potential. This super will give you the lowest gains of all three, but you will get the power early (great torque).

The last is almost a combination of the first two. You get early boost for great torque and continous boost and power on the high end. I haven't studied supers in a while, and the difference between the twin screw and roots is eluding me (the two are similiar; one uses two propellers and the other uses two screw-like helical gears---this is all a foggy memory though, I could very well be wrong).

if i have 4.30 gears and dont plan to change them then which one would be the best, i have seen a car with 4.56s an run the vortech/turbo style one and ran exremly good, so would my gears affect anything with the super charger because i know wit ha turbo its not good to have low gears because once u spool up you will lose gear very fast, so which one would be best with my 4.30s? i was thinking the kenne bell
 
I've always been a fan of the Vortech. That would be my first choice. Do a search on this topic; I did a thread on this awhile ago, and it showed some very telling dyno results. It really is hard to argue with the Kenne Bell.

You can't go wrong with a Vortech S or SQ trim blower. Great kits at decent prices, great quality and will make excellent power on your street car.

Centrifugal blowers are really not quite like turbos. Turbos generally will make close to full boost at lower RPM's and can hold that boost level across the RPM range. The blowers will make more boost the higher you rev them. You will also NOT loose any low RPM power with the Centrifugal blowers but the gains will again be larger as you spin the motor higher.

A stock 94/95 Vortech kit with an Anderson power pipe would be my suggestion for you.
 
i wouldn't get a blower with low end power like a kennebell b/c of your gears. they have boost at such a low RPM that you will spin the tires from the get go. your gears are really steep for something like that IMO. i have a vortech and i like it alot, S-Trim. If you want ppl to hear you coming and know u have a blower get the V-1, loud blower whine. If you don't (like me) get the V-2 SQ (super quiet), you can barely hear it.

I got the car with the Vortech, but i honestly wanted a Procharger. they are self contained (no oil pan taping). They are on the left side of the engine which means 2 things:
A.) you do have to relocate the battery, but thats less weight in the front and more in the rear
B.) you can put an intercooler in, which in fact comes with it. this means cooler boosted air so u can run higher boost without detonation problems.
You'll hear the same arguements in the other direction, but that is what i gather from it all.

my question is though are you sure u want to get blown? cause with those gears, its just beggin to be stroked and cammed out.

How can you say that? It all depends on turbo size. If you want a turbo that will make any kind of appreciable gains, there will be associated turbo lag, due to the larger turbine needing time (and exhaust) to spool up. That is precisely the reason for a twin turbo setup--two smaller turbos = less lag and more power. As for your smaller turbo holding boost levels across the rpm range, that too is incorrect. Generally speaking, stock turbo cars run very small turbos and achieve incredible torque and hp at low rpms, but will fall short of breath (and hp) just like a stock Mustang does--not enough airflow at higher engine speeds. Blowers will make boost the higher you rev them, if it is a Centrifugal blower, not limited by displacement of blower.

Take the money you plan on spending and build a nasty motor. You'll be happier in the end. I bought a Procharger 9lb boost w/ 3 core intercooler for my stock 92 lx. It's been one thing after another trying to get this thing dialed in right. ATI's tech line has been no help whatsoever!!! :notnice: I'm finally getting it to run like it should. There has been no low end power or torque loss(3:55 gears) but it is alot more involved than just slappin on a blower. I had to go to larger injectors, go to a bigger mass air. Everytime I changed something to fix one problem it created two others. I'm basically saying it's not just a clear cut install like they say it will be. I'm finally getting all the bugs worked out(I hope)but it has been much more expensive and aggrivating than first anticipated. If I had to do it all over again, I would have either built a motor or bought a modified crate motor. Hope this helps you in your decision. :nice:

Well...if you say so but I can write what I did because it's true. Every turbo engine with the proper turbo I've ever dealt with did excactly what I said.
